BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

ABC, 8:00 p.m. ET

After two high-profile premiere unveilings on ABC’s top-rated Wednesday comedy lineup, this new series shifts to its regular night on Tuesday – starting off with another double dose. By the time they’re over, if you watch both, you’ll be well acquainted with this new Asian-American sitcom’s strengths. And its weaknesses.

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

This sitcom is having fun in its final NBC season, using its slightly future setting (2017) to have given its characters time to grow, or change – or, at least, react differently to one another. That’s evident in tonight’s two back-to-back episodes, both of them fresh. And one of them features an unusual guest star, portraying himself: John McCain.

ABC, 9:00 p.m. ET

This series has only a few more weeks to wrap up before the return, in its time slot, of its sister series, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) has had a good couple of weeks, finally getting to go on her first mission, and more than holding her own with the Howling Commandos. But now, she’s under danger from a threat much closer to home – next door, in fact, in the neighboring apartment, in the form of a brainwashed Nazi girl, now all grown up and extremely lethal. ABC hasn’t renewed this limited series yet for a Season 2 – but based on its efforts this first season, ABC should do just that.

PBS, 10:00 p.m. ET

Dr. Atul Gawande, who wrote last year’s nonfiction book Being Mortal: Medicine and What Happens in the End, is the focal point of tonight’s new Frontline, which examines the way in which we do, and should, deal with people diagnosed with a terminal illness. Check local listings.

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

Boyd (Walt Goggins) has decided to target the crime kingpin who threatened Ava. Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) has decided to target the sinister outsider who’s buying up all the local land. Turns out they’re both after the same guy, played by Sam Elliott – but that doesn’t mean they’re working together. In fact, as this show builds towards its series finale, just the opposite is true, while, also occupying center stage, is Garret Dillahunt, playing yet another memorable villain, as he did twice, also opposite Olyphant, on HBO’s Deadwood.
