BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

Billy Bob Thornton slides into the TCM Guest Programmer seat tonight, chatting with TCM host Ben Mankiewicz and presenting his personal takes on three personally selected movies. Otto Preminger’s The Man with the Golden Arm, from 1955 and starring Frank Sinatra, leads off the lineup at 8 p.m. ET, followed by 1956’s Giant, directed by George Stevens, at 10:15 p.m. ET. And later, there’s one more…

ABC, 9:00 p.m. ET

The Golden State Warriors have won Games 1 and 2 of this series handily, and authoritatively, putting the Cleveland Cavaliers in quite a hole. But the Warriors had the same 2-0 lead in this championship series a year ago, and the Cavaliers somehow found a way to win it all. So tonight’s game, which shifts the setting to Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena, will be especially intense – with the Cavs hoping to find a way to repeat that history, and with the Warriors just as determined to avoid it.

Fox, 9:00 p.m. ET

Tonight’s guests on this live cooking competition include James Corden, who’s sliding over from CBS and The Late Late Show for the occasion. What can we expect from this live show? My vote: a quick ride around the Fox lot, with Ramsay at the wheel, in a fast round of Carpool Teriyaki…

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

“So, it’s a conspiracy now?” asks the incoming police chief, incredulously. Yes, it is – and the person who suspects that conspiracy, intrepid small-town outgoing police chief Gloria Burgle (Carrie Coon, pictured), is the chief person (literally) following both the trail of bodies and the stolen money. Along with recently detained police prisoner Nikki Swango (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), last seen unconscious in an overturned police transport bus and about to be grabbed or killed by bad guys, Coon’s Burgle is now driving the narrative of this season of Fargo – and driving it beautifully.

TBS, 10:30 p.m. ET

What a week.  Again. Is it just me, or does every week these days seem to cry out for explication, deconstruction – and a much-needed dose of humor? C'mon, Sam... float like a butterfly. Sting like a Bee.

BBC America, 11:00 p.m. ET

SPECIAL: A few days before BBC America launches the final season of this fine sci-fi series, the network reaches back in time and presents a repeat of the very first episode – but an enhanced episode, with on-screen notes that put this show in a larger, and more current, context. It sounds interesting, so go ahead, BBC America – send in the clones!

TCM, 2:00 a.m. ET

The final movie in Billy Bob Thornton’s personal trilogy as TCM Guest Programmer arrives late, or early (depending upon your sleep habits), but is worth recording for more convenient viewing: It’s 1973’s Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, a Sam Peckinpah Western starring James Coburn and Kris Kristofferson in the title roles, and featuring Bob Dylan as both a supporting player (a mysterious character named Alias) and the composer of the film’s soundtrack (including the gorgeous ballad “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”).

Holy Lolapalooza! It's been a semi-secret in my life that I like to GLAM UP and belt out a few tunes at my local watering hole. I didn't ever think that one of my FANS would stumble in to one of my performances!!! ROTFLMBFAO!!!!

Which song did you like best: Girls Just Want to Have Fun, or Highway to Hell?

Next time, please introduce yourself!! I promise, I don't bite!!!! (unless we both mutually agree that we would like that!!!!!)

Fondly yours in TV,

Dave
