BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Decades, 12:00 p.m. ET

From 1969 to 1974, ABC presented a relative rarity on TV: a prime-time comedy anthology series. Love, American Style had no fixed cast, and presented anywhere from a single story to a handful of shorter vignettes within each week’s program. But if you want a show that preserves, in televised amber, a perfect representative slice of the period in which it was made, Love, American Style is it. If you want to see how the free-love Sixties flowed into the less altruistic Seventies, you’ll see it here. From noon today, the Decades channel is running a weekend marathon of selected episodes, including tomorrow’s 6 p.m. ET telecast of 1972’s “Love and the Happy Days,” Garry Marshall’s backdoor pilot for his super-successful Happy Days series. Today’s lineup has its treats as well, including the recently departed Jerry Stiller and his wife, Anne Meara, in an episode at 11 p.m. ET – and another then-married show-biz couple, Sonny & Cher, co-starring in their own Love, American Style installment at 5:30 p.m. ET (pictured).

YouTube, 3:00 p.m. ET

Last month, the major broadcast networks and a few other entities combined forces to present Graduate Together: America Honors the High School Class of 2020, a virtual national graduation ceremony – the highlight of which was a commencement speech by former President Barack Obama. This new virtual graduation celebration is a streaming event offered by and on YouTube, and begins at 3 p.m. ET today. Once again, Barack Obama is scheduled to be featured, as are Michelle Obama, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Lady Gaga, BTS, and many more. But given how national headlines and attention have been focused on something other than “just” the pandemic, this event – when, out in the real world, so many young people are gathering and marching in protest – seems like something to keep an eye on. Maybe both eyes. As for the 2020 class being honored: Whether you’re graduating from high school, college, or graduate school, be proud of yourselves. You’re living in, and through, a remarkably challenging time, which will get better only if you do your part, and basically do better than your predecessors have. I’m rooting for you.

Lifetime, 8:00 p.m. ET

This is not a recommendation. But sometimes, the randomly matched word titles for Lifetime’s telemovies are so flat-out weird, they fascinate me. It’s as though the programmers at Lifetime have twin dartboards on their wall, with words on them instead of numbers, and just shoot randomly to generate new titles. On one dartboard, the descriptors: “Teenage,” “Killer,” “Deadly.” On the other, the subjects: “Escort,” “Mistress,” “Babysitter.” And tonight, it’s a new entry, Psycho Yoga Instructor. I haven’t seen it, and don’t plan to watch it. I wonder, though, precisely what makes him such an unhinged yoga teacher. Does he instruct his pupils to perform, say, an Upward Dog?

HBO, 8:00 p.m. ET

Tommy Lee Jones and Brad Pitt star as father and son in this 2019 movie about space exploration, unresolved family issues, and the fate of the universe. Not necessarily in that order…
