This 1934 screwball comedy remains one of the most honored movies of all time, which is one reason to make a special effort to watch, or revisit, when it makes a prime-time uninterrupted and unedited showing, as it does tonight on TCM. Clark Cable plays a reporter on the run with a pampered socialite (Claudette Colbert), in a script adapted by Robert Riskin from an existing short story, and directed by the great Frank Capra. It Happened One Night, as it happened, was the first movie to sweep the five major awards at the Oscars: Best Actor and Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture. And there’s yet another reason to watch: The film was one of the last made under before Hollywood began rigidly enforcing its self-imposed production code. So this film is a bit more naughty, and sly, than it could have been had it been released just a year later.
