2014 WORLD SERIES

Fox, 8:00 p.m. ET

Madison Bumgarner (pictured, or pitchered, here) pitched a dominant complete-game shutout to win Game 5 of this year’s World Series, handing the San Francisco Giants a 3-2 edge in games as the Kansas City Royals, for tonight’s Game 6, return to home turf. A loss by Kansas City, and the Giants win yet another Series crown. A win, though, forces a Game 7 – but to get there, the Royals have to win tonight.

 
  
 
 
THE FLASH

CW, 8:00 p.m. ET

Once the one-week-later viewing numbers were tabulated for the premiere of this series, it emerged as the most-watched program in CW history. Talk about a fast start – which, I guess, seems only appropriate. Tonight, the guest villain is Captain Cold, played by Wentworth Miller of Prison Break.

 
  
 
 
MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

ABC, 9:00 p.m. ET

Last week, as one of the surprises served up by this series, Simmons returned to the fold, extracted from her top-secret mission infiltrating H.Y.D.R.A. But her tense times aren’t over: Tonight, she has to deal with the reactions of Fitz, who missed her so much he went crazy without her. Literally: hallucinations and everything, including hallucinations of her.

 
  
 
 
FRONTLINE: "THE RISE OF ISIS"

PBS, 10:00 p.m. ET

This look at the history of Isis is written and produced by Martin Smith, who, over the years with Frontline, has more than earned the right to take on controversial subjects and follow his reporting no matter where it leads. Here, once again, he does just that. Check local listings.  

 
  
 
 
SONS OF ANARCHY

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

This now qualifies, I’m pretty sure, as the most violent show on television. Last week Bobby (Mark Boone Junior), one of the only remaining sympathetic characters on the series, had his eye scooped out by his heartless captors. That eye was sent, along with a video, to Jax and company – and guess what? Jax is out for revenge, which has turned out to be his new default mode.
