BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

HBO, 8:00 p.m. ET

Ryan Gosling is riding high right now as the male star of La La Land, singing and dancing with onscreen partner Emma Stone. Right before making that movie, though, he partnered with another charismatic screen actor for a film set in Los Angeles, in the 2016 buddy comedy action movie The Nice Guys, opposite Russell Crowe. It may seem like an odd pairing – but in this lighthearted period mystery movie about an apparent murder in the porn industry, their comic chemistry works just fine.

Starz!, 9:00 p.m. ET

This is the cable premiere of the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot, starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones – four women who, each in her own time, burst out of the ultra-competitive Saturday Night Live pack to grab the spotlight. McCarthy did it as guest host, the other three as regulars, but the gang’s all here in this distaff take on the ectoplasmic comedy franchise launched in 1984, starring Bill Murray.

TCM, 9:45 p.m. ET

Tune in early for tonight’s TCM showing of this 1992 Robert Altman film, because you don’t want to miss the lengthy, involved opening tracking shot. It’s one of many, many inside jokes served up to film buffs in this very knowing satire of Hollywood. Tim Robbins plays a studio executive who keeps getting threatening notes from a writer whose work he’s rejected. The cast includes Greta Scacchi, Fred Ward, Whoopi Goldberg, Peter Gallagher, and so, so many great cameos, starting with Karen Black, Cher, James Coburn, John Cusack, Gary Busey, Peter Falk, Dennis Franz, Teri Garr, Louise Fletcher, Jeff Goldblum, Elliott Gould, Anjelica Huston, Buck Henry, Jack Lemmon and Malcolm McDowell. They’re all playing sly, often unflattering versions of themselves, long before Larry David perfected the art in Curb Your Enthusiasm. Listen closely, during the opening sequence, for Buck Henry pitching the sequel to a movie he co-scripted back in the 1960s – The Graduate.

BBC America, 10:00 p.m. ET

Take note: tonight’s guests include Matthew McConaughey, Christina Ricci, and Ed Sheeran.

TCM, 12:00 a.m. ET

This isn’t the current CMT series. It’s the 1975 movie – another Robert Altman film, and one of his very best. The music is wonderful. The performances – by Lily Tomlin, Karen Black, Keith Carradine, Henry Gibson, Renee Blakley and others – are exceptional. Altman’s direction is inspired. And the story, as it delves into the political arena, might be even more disturbing today than it was when this film was released four decades ago.

Holy Lolapalooza! It's been a semi-secret in my life that I like to GLAM UP and belt out a few tunes at my local watering hole. I didn't ever think that one of my FANS would stumble in to one of my performances!!! ROTFLMBFAO!!!!

Which song did you like best: Girls Just Want to Have Fun, or Highway to Hell?

Next time, please introduce yourself!! I promise, I don't bite!!!! (unless we both mutually agree that we would like that!!!!!)

Fondly yours in TV,

Dave
