BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Public Television, Check local listings

This new edition offers thought-provoking takes on two very recent events: the Boston bombing and the latest Congressional logjam. In the first, columnist Glenn Greenwalk (pictured) talks about government secrecy and national security. In the second, political scholars Norman Ornstein and Thomas Mann examine Congress’ failure to pass any gun-control measures, and find it symptomatic of a problem they identified years ago. Moyers & Company is televised Friday through Sunday on local TV stations. To find when and where it airs in your area, see the Moyers & Company website.

LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER: “RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN’S CAROUSEL”

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

Nathan Gunn and Kelli O’Hara star in this revival production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic musical – one of the biggest-ticket offerings all season from Live from Lincoln Center. So enjoy, without the hassle of commuting, parking and ticket purchases. Check local listings.

THE EXORCIST

BBC America, 9:00 p.m. ET

Now that this movie is 40 years old, it’s an appropriate moment to give it its full due. With special effects that long predated CGI, director William Friedkin managed to make this one of the scariest movies ever filmed – then or now. Watch it anew, and see if it still works for you. My guess is that it will.

ROCK CENTER WITH BRIAN WILLIAMS

NBC, 10:00 p.m. ET

Yesterday on TV, you saw Bill Clinton as one of the living U.S. Presidents gathered in Texas to launch George W. Bush’s presidential library center. Tonight on TV, you can see another Clinton – daughter Chelsea – as she presents a Rock Center feature on Beck Bennett, the guy in those AT&T commercials. I suppose she could have done a feature on an NBC series star – but more people, these days, are watching the commercials, including TVWW's Eric Gould, who was out in front of Rock Center with his AT&T-Mad Men fantasy last February.

REAL TIME WITH BILL MAHER

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

Last week’s show was perfectly timed to react to the capture of the surviving Boston bomber. Tonight’s show will be less timely, but probably just as volatile – and Bill Maher’s scheduled guests this evening include Anna Deavere Smith and Maher’s fellow talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel.
