BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

NBC, 9:00 a.m. ET

There are two ways to watch this annual NBC telecast of New York’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, hosted this year by Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie and Al Roker. One way is with the sound on. The other is the way I prefer – which, I suppose, is a mute point.

Various Networks, 12:30 p.m. ET

There are three games played today, in what once was a single-game Thanksgiving Day tradition. The most interesting, though not necessarily the most competitive, of the bunch is the central one: the 3-7 Dallas Cowboys facing the undefeated 10-0 Carolina Panthers, led by Cam Newton (pictured). That game begins at 4:30 p.m. ET on CBS. The all-day football action, though, begins at 12:30 p.m. ET on Fox, when two losing teams, the 4-6 Philadelphia Eagles and the 3-7 Detroit Lions, try to fight their way one win closer to a .500 record. Then, at 8:30 p.m. ET on NBC, the 4-6 Chicago Bears visit the 7-3 Green Bay Packers. At halftime, the Packers will retire Brett Favre’s No. 4 jersey, an event in itself.

AMC, 5:30 p.m. ET

All three Godfather movies are shown tonight, in a back-to-back-to-back trilogy. The first two are classics, and indispensible. The third is… not. But if you’re a completest, or an insomniac, go for it.

PBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

Away from college for the Thanksgiving holiday, Arlo Guthrie stayed at a friend’s house in Great Barrington, MA, in an old church turned into a very welcoming family home. That was in November 1965 – 50 years ago today. After trying to help out by taking a load of garbage to the local dump, Arlo ended up arrested for littering, a crime which, much later, resurfaced when he was contacted by his local draft board. He wrote a famously rambling song about his misadventures, released as the album Alice’s Restaurant in 1967, and later as a 1969 movie. But Arlo Guthrie always considered the date of the adventure, not the album, as the anniversary worth honoring – so though he retired the 18-minute song from his live concert program decades ago, he performs it every 10th anniversary year. So in this concert, he sings it again, with all those lyrics about glossy photos and father-rapers definitely included. Check local listings.

TLC, 8:00 p.m. ET

Kristin Chenoweth and Matthew Morrison headline this theatrical symposium for high schoolers, held at the White House.

PBS, 9:30 p.m. ET

I recommended this when it premiered Tuesday – and it’s even more appropriate to recommend today. Not only is it Thanksgiving, but now we have a full review of this latest Ric Burns documentary: for more, see David Sicilia’s TV Moneyland. Check local listings.
