More movies are shown by TCM in anticipation of Halloween tonight, starting with one of the first excellent movie sequels ever made: 1935’s Bride of Frankenstein. Some of the iconic scenes closely associated with Frankenstein actually come from this film instead – and Elsa Lanchester, as the titular creature, is electrifying. And electrified. This week’s episode of this beautifully shot, intriguing miniseries import gives generous chunks of screen time to two key supporting actors: John Goodman (pictured) as a wealthy American in prewar London in the early 1930s, and Jacqueline Bisset, introduced tonight as an influential, reclusive socialite. But keep your focus on the star of this period Stephen Poliakoff miniseries about a black jazz band: He’s Chiwetel Ejiofor, who was just praised so effusively by Jon Stewart on The Daily Show for his central role in the new movie 12 Years a Slave.

David Bianculli has been a TV critic since 1975, including a 14-year stint at the New York Daily News, and sees no reason to stop now. Currently, he's TV critic for NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross, and is an occasional substitute host for that show. He's also an author and teaches TV and film history at New Jersey's Rowan University. His 2009 Dangerously Funny: The Uncensored Story of 'The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour', has been purchased for film rights.
