BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Various Networks, 12:00 p.m. ET

Yesterday’s games provided all sorts of the thrills, upsets and excitement that you expect from March Madness – and today, eight more games are played to identify the survivors for next week’s games. CBS televises the first three, beginning at 12:15 ET with Kansas, seeded No. 2 in the South, facing Stanford (No. 10). At 2:45 p.m. ET, Midwest’s undefeated No. 1 seed Wichita State faces No. 8 seed Kentucky. Then, at 5:15 p.m. ET, Iowa State (seeded No. 3 in the East) faces North Carolina (No. 6).  Over on TNT at 6:10 p.m. ET, Mercer (seeded No. 14 in the Midwest), faces Tennessee (No. 11). That may sound like a ho-hum game, but no: Mercer already has busted a bunch of brackets by ousting No 3. Seed Duke, and Tennessee beat No. 6 seed Massachusetts. On TBS at 7:10 p.m. ET, another Cinderella team, the South’s No. 12 seed, Stephen F. Austin, faces UCLA (No. 4). On TruTV at 7:40 p.m. ET, Creighton (seeded No. 3 in the West) faces Baylor (No. 6). On TNT at 8:40 p.m. ET, Virginia (No. 1 in the East) faces Memphis (No. 8). And finally, another top seed plays to end the night: Arizona, No. 1 in the West, faces Gonzaga (No. 8). Once again, even before the games begin: Whew.

Fox, 9:00 p.m. ET

What a well-timed month in which to relaunch this groundbreaking astronomical science series. Earlier this week, scientists unearthed a potential new discovery that not only might validate another of Einstein’s theories, but the entire Big Bang theory as well. (The concept, not the sitcom.) Even today, some people don’t believe some of the science discussed in Cosmos – but there has been progress. And that’s the subject of tonight’s installment, titled “When Knowledge Conquered Fear.” Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson hosts.

CBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

This late-season story line, about a resurfacing of the ballot-box-tampering issue, has been exciting to watch, especially since there have been so many twists, turns and frustrating dead ends. It seems that the trail of evidence is leading to Alan Cumming’s Eli Gold. But I’m rooting for him, and not just because I treasure the character of Eli. I also just saw Cumming last night in previews, reprising his role of the emcee in a Broadway re-revival of Cabaret, and loved it, and him, all over again.

AMC, 9:00 p.m. ET

Last week’s episode delivered the kind of horror you don’t usually expect from a horror franchise: human horror, having nothing to do with killer creatures and everything to do with the human condition. Come to think of it, The Walking Dead has pulled this trick on several occasions, but never more effectively than last week, when it whittled its ranks even more, but without having a single walker to blame for the body count. And this week, what happens next? The way this season is winding up, almost anything…

NBC, 10:00 p.m. ET

The second episode of this series delivers even more secrets and surprises, and also shows how the different characters continue to advance their respective secret agendas. Gillian Anderson’s character of Meg, for example, is putting up part of her fortune to meet a demand placed by the kidnappers, even though her own sister, an FBI agent working the case, knows nothing about it.

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: A lot of parallel plot lines meet tonight, in the season finale. It’s Adam’s opening night on stage – a night that raises a conflict for Hannah, because of the news she’s gotten unexpectedly. And unexpected news hits all the other girls, too, in ways that will leave many of them, and many viewers, spinning between seasons.
