BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: The long-running cult TV series Mystery Science Theater 3000 has always had a strong connection with Thanksgiving – or, at least, turkeys, especially of the cinematic variety. In fact, today, Thanksgiving Day, marks 30 years since MST3K launched as a low-rent local offering on KTMA-TV in Minneapolis. On the subsequent national level, if you’re keeping track, this is Season 12 for the antics of the villains from outer space torturing other interstellar travelers by forcing them to watch bad movies, and record their reactions – which, for both the human experiment victim and his robot sidekicks, lean heavily towards well-timed wisecracks. Six new episodes, which means six bad movies accompanied by snarky interjections, premiere today on Netflix, in what is Season 2 of this streaming service’s reboot. Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt return as the new villains – and the films, this time around, include the horrifyingly awful Mac and Me, a movie that prominently incorporates product placement of food items, locations and TV ad characters from McDonald’s. Other turkeys being carved up today include Killer Fish and Atlantic Rim.

IFC, 6:00 a.m. ET

The classic CBS children’s series Pee-Wee’s Playhouse gets an all-day marathon, running old episodes nonstop until 6 a.m. ET Friday. Oh, but there is one interruption, and it’s a welcome one: At 12:06 p.m. ET today, and again at 6:12 p.m. ET tonight, IFC presents the most recent revival special, Pee-Wee’s Christmas.

NBC, 9:00 a.m. ET

This is the 92nd annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in New York, and the 66th time NBC has televised it. For three hours beginning at 9 a.m. ET, viewers at home can watch the floats, and sit back and chill. But if you really want to chill, go to Manhattan and watch in person. It'll be coooooold.

Various Networks, 12:30 p.m. ET

The idea of pro football games on Thanksgiving used to be a one-game affair, almost always featuring the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys indeed are playing today, but Dallas is only one of six teams showcased in three different NFL games televised nationally today. The first, broadcast by CBS at 12:30 p.m. ET, features the Chicago Bears vs. the Detroit Lions. The second game, on Fox beginning at 4:30 p.m. ET, has the Washington Redskins facing the aforementioned Cowboys. And on NBC’s Football Night in America at 8:20 p.m. ET, the Thanksgiving triple-header ends with the Atlanta Falcons battling the New Orleans Saints.
