BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

ABC, 8:00 p.m. ET

The fifth episode in this series, premiering tonight, is called “Girl in the Flower Dress” – and here she is. Who she is, and why the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents follow her around the world, is better left a surprise. Especially since, until I see the show, I don’t know the answers to those questions myself.

PRETTY LITTLE LIARS

ABC Family, 8:00 p.m. ET

The Halloween episodes of this cable series have become a sort of mini-tradition, because the writers always seem to find ways to put the leading ladies into imaginative costumes and dispatch them to parties fraught with dangers. This year, the party they’re crashing, as part of their latest investigation, takes place in a graveyard – and their costumes of choice are perhaps best described as gaudy Edwardian.

NEW GIRL

Fox, 9:00 p.m. ET

Zooey Deschanel, as Jess, seems to have a preference for dressing up in costumes usually associated with men. Remember the wedding she attended as Elvis? Well, for tonight’s Halloween episode, she takes on a character from the Batman universe. Batgirl? Poison Ivy? Catwoman? Nah. Jess is donning the cowl of the Caped Crusader himself…

SONS OF ANARCHY

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

The fallout continues from the twin battles in which the club is engaged – one with the drug runners, the other with the police investigators. And while last week’s plot twists stretched credulity, this is no time to leave. Too much is happening, too quickly, and too many characters are at risk.

REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

This is an interview, on the eve of the 2013 World Series, that should prove really interesting. Gumbel’s guest – and make no mistake, Gumbel is a sharp interviewer – is Reggie Jackson. Booking Mr. October in October, that’s a nice move.
