BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

This is the first music concert ever held at Notre Dame – the Indiana stadium, not the Paris cathedral. And it’s a live TV production starring country star Garth Brooks, and an event that seemingly could have been mounted decades ago. It was a concert held Oct. 20, so it was live then, but, despite the TV show's title, isn't live now. But here it is.

ENEMIES: THE PRESIDENT, JUSTICE & THE FBI

Showtime, 8:00 p.m. ET

Part 3 of Enemies takes us to the Bill Clinton impeachment hearings of 1998. What possible parallels could we find 20 years later? Don’t worry – the question is rhetorical.

ESCAPE AT DANNEMORA

Showtime, 10:00 p.m. ET

The acting in this new miniseries has been magnificent, and it’s early yet. Paul Dano and Benicio Del Toro star in this seven-hour miniseries, playing real-life convicts Richard Matt and David Sweat, who escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility in 2015 with help from prison employee Joyce Mitchell, played by Patricia Arquette – whose characterization here is unforgettably human, sensitive, and unglamorous. Even the sex scenes, so far, have been unsettlingly devoid of not only passion, but dignity.

NIGHTFLYERS

Syfy, 10:00 p.m. ET

MINISERIES PREMIERE: Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin wrote his novella Nightflyers in 1980, and watched it turn into a lackluster movie version in 1987. The contract for the movie rights of that novella also included the TV rights – and three decades later, after the mega-success of Thrones, Syfy has inherited those rights and produced this new miniseries, which rolls out nightly over the next two weeks. It’s about scientists about a futuristic space vehicle, and the stars include Gretchen Mol. For a full review, see David Hinckley’s All Along the Watchtower.
