BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Various Networks, 3:00 p.m. ET

Two games. Four teams. Two networks. The winner of each contest advances to the Super Bowl. (Except for the network: CBS and Fox have respective rights to the AFC and NFC games, but in two weeks, Fox gets the Super Bowl this year. The fix is in.) Today at 3 p.m. ET, CBS presents the still-rolling Tennessee Titans against the Kansas City Chiefs. Then, at 6:30 p.m. ET, Fox presents the Green Bay Packers vs. the San Francisco 49ers.

Showtime, 8:00 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: It’s the Season 7 finale for this well-acted, often surprisingly unpredictable Showtime drama series. And if anything is predictable at all, it’s that almost every character is in danger of being written out, or wiped out, before this season-ending episode is over.

TBS, TNT, 8:00 p.m. ET

Simulcast on TBS and TNT, it’s another awards show – and another clump of tea leaves to read regarding the odds of movies heading for this year’s Oscars contest.

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

After last week’s two-episode premiere, we now know enough about this Stephen King adaptation to know how little we really know. Ben Mendelsohn and Cynthia Erivo star as investigators of a particularly baffling set of crimes, where they’re faced not only with different sets of facts, but different sets of faces in surveillance cameras and other usually reliable sources of evidence. If there doesn’t seem to be any rational explanation for it, just remember that Stephen King rations out rationality very sparingly…

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Armando Iannucci, creator of Veep, concocted this new spacebound comedy series, which sort of takes the dysfunctional co-workers and appointed, vapid bosses typical of Veep and shoots them into outer space. Hugh Laurie and Josh Gad, as two of the token figureheads of this ill-fated space ship, are just right (Laurie also was pitch-perfect hilarious on Veep), but this new series doesn’t open as strongly, or humorously, as it could. Yet I want to like it, and plan to stay with it for a while, hoping it’ll gel. It has more to say, and more ways to say it, than Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville… but so far, Avenue 5 hasn’t escaped from TV’s gravitational pull to really soar. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower, and for background info from TCA, see Mike Hughes' Open Mike.

PBS, 10:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: This import, a 2019 limited series co-produced by British and Austrian television and shown last year on the BBC, takes the Sherlock Holmes model and teams a doctor with a shrewd investigator. In this case, and in the cases they pursue, the detective is Oskar Rheinhardt (played by Jurgen Maurer), and the doctor is Max Liebermann (Matthew Beard), a student of Sigmund Freud’s. The setting is 1900s Vienna, and Vienna Blood is shot on location in that city. Check local listings. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

HBO, 10:30 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: HBO didn’t provide preview copies for the Season 10 premiere of Larry David’s series, but if anyone has earned the benefit of the comic doubt, it’s this guy. (Guest stars this season include Jon Hamm from Mad Men.) And though it’s 10 years in terms of TV storytelling, it’s twice that in Larry David time. He’s taken time off between seasons so often that the first season of Curb began in 2000. But on TV as in life, some things are worth the wait, and Curb Your Enthusiasm is TV Worth Waiting For.
