BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

THE CIRCUS: INSIDE THE WILDEST POLITICAL SHOW ON EARTH

Showtime, 8:00 p.m. ET

What’s the point of saying, “Well, this has been a particularly volatile week in the world of politics. I wonder how this show will summarize and cover events after the past several days?”  These days, those sentences seem to emanate from good old Mad magazine’s Department of Redundancy Department…

ELVIS ALL-STAR TRIBUTE

NBC, 9:00 p.m. ET

A half-century after Elvis Presley mounted his famous, successful comeback special in 1968, NBC presents this commemorative salute, produced by long-time Grammy music stager Ken Ehrlich. Blake Shelton hosts – and guest performers include Shawn Mendes, Josh Groban, John Fogerty, Ed Sheeran, Carrie Underwood, Little Big Town, and John Legend.

VICTORIA ON MASTERPIECE

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

Tonight’s new episode is set, in part, in an old-fashioned royal ball, which gives Jenna Coleman, as the usually drably dressed Queen Victoria, the chance to strut her stuff in gala fashion. Check local listings.

THE WALKING DEAD

AMC, 9:00 p.m. ET

Last week, the Hilltop troop captured and tried to interrogate one of the captured mystery people – the unknown outsiders who use the facial skins of walkers as masks to walk among them, and “whisper.” Standard interrogation methods didn’t work, but a more sly approach has started to reap information – and tonight, we learn about, and meet, the group’s Alpha and Omega.

TRUE DETECTIVE

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

This is the penultimate episode – and right on schedule, we’re about to get some definitive answers to some of this mystery’s central questions. Including whether there really was, as one captured girl kept insisting, a “pink room” somewhere in a secluded castle…

LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER

HBO, 11:00 p.m. ET

What’s the point of saying, “Well, this has been a particularly volatile week in the world of politics. I wonder how this show will summarize and cover events after the past several days?”  These days, those sentences seem to emanate from good old Mad magazine’s Department of Redundancy Department…
