BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Fox, 8:00 p.m. ET

Both these American League teams played aggressively and impressively all year, winning more games during the regular season and fighting their way through a challenging postseason without ever giving up. And now, those two teams, the Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals, face one another and battle for the AL pennant – starting with this Game 1, televised by Fox, live from Kansas City.

NBC, 8:30 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Imagine me as the Robot from Lost in Space, waving my arms while trying to steer you away from this horrible NBC sitcom: “Warning! Warning! Danger! Danger!” It’s not just that it’s not funny. It’s also repugnant, especially in the age-inappropriate lines of dialogue it gives to a little girl. You’ll know what I mean if you watch – but you shouldn’t. For what other TVWW critics have to say about Truth Be Told, visit our TV Worth Watching Annual Fall Preview 2015 section.

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

This New York Philharmonic production of the classic Oscar Hammerstein-Jerome Kern Broadway musical is semi-staged, which means minimal scenery, less ornate costumes and a cast assembled just for a few nights of performances. This means, though, that you can get quite a cast for a limited commitment, and this one includes Vanessa Williams, Julian Ovendon from Downton Abbey, Norm Lewis, Lauren Worsham and Fred Willard.  It also includes numbers rarely performed on stage, including songs added for the 1938 Show Boat film, and others included in, but subsequently trimmed from, the score for the original 1927 production. The action covers three generations of show folk, from 1880 to 1927 – so it was very topical then, at the end. And still is today, because much of the plot concerns race relations and prejudice. Check local listings.

Starz!, 9:00 p.m. ET

Julianne Moore is remarkable in this 2014 story about a professor who is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. It shows the effects of the disease from her point of view as well as that of her family – and though it’s ultimately uplifting and thoroughly informative and empathic, it’s nonetheless occasionally uncomfortable to watch – especially if you have a loved one who is going through a similar type of mental erosion. Moore’s portrayal is so subtle and sensitive, though it shouldn’t be missed. Just know what you’re heading in to. But caregivers may find not only solace here, but understanding, if they can stand to tune in. Alec Baldwin and Kristen Stewart co-star as the husband and daughter to Moore’s Alice.

Cinemax, 10:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: Clive Owen and the rest of the cast, portraying pioneering, often troubled caregivers at the Knickerbocker Hospital in turn-of-the-century New York, are back for a second season of intense surgery – and inventive direction, thanks to having Steven Soderbergh at the helm.

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

The top-of-the-show guest is worth the price of admission tonight. Fresh from his strong appearance at Tuesday’s Democratic presidential debate, making a return visit to Real Time, it’s… Bernie Sanders!
