BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

IFC, 6:00 a.m. ET

Jessica Lange had a blast, and no doubt secured a future Emmy nomination, playing Joan Crawford in FX’s recent Feud: Bette and Joan. But long before that, back in 1981, Faye Dunaway was playing Crawford, in an aggressively unflattering portrait in the movie Mommie Dearest – based on the book by her rebellious daughter Christina Crawford, portrayed in her more mature years by Diana Scarwid. And today, for Mother’s Day, you can tune in and see Mommie Dearest any time you want, because IFC is televising it over and over again, as a 24-hour marathon. Think of it, I guess, as A Christmas Story-type holiday marathon – only for moms and their children, and with wire hangers.

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

Tim Pigott-Smith stars in this TV version of his recent London and Broadway stage triumph – and it’s a fortunate record of his performances, because, unfortunately, after starring in Mike Bartlett’s wildly daring 2015 play about a hypothetical succession of British royalty, Pigott-Smith died unexpectedly last month at age 70. His most famous role was as star of the classic 1984 miniseries The Jewel in the Crown. Here, in King Charles III, he plays the title role – in a play, written and performed entirely in Shakespearean iambic pentameter, imagining what might happen, in a near future in which the Queen dies, and Prince Charles inherits the crown. In other royal roles in this drama, William is played by Oliver Chris, Harry by Richard Goulding, Kate by Charlotte Riley, Camilla by Margot Leicester – and, as a ghostly apparition haunting the castle (another nod to the Bard), Katie Brayben as the late, but still not forgotten, Princess Diana. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower. Check local listings.

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

In last week’s episode, Kevin (Justin Theroux) was reunited with, and whisked away by, his father (Scott Glenn), while Nora (Carrie Coon) was rejected by the cult group she was investigating, as both of them made their way to Australia. Tonight, Kevin’s journey takes him to a big boat, a wild party – and some very dangerous surroundings.

Starz!, 9:00 p.m. ET

In episode three, we meet even more gods, including one played by Kristin Chenoweth – and also witness a lot more outrageousness, as the old and new gods in Neil Gaiman’s bizarre tale begin to take sides. And take aim.

HBO, 10:30 p.m. ET

Selina (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) had some bad luck last week with her presidential library fundraising, but she hasn’t given up yet. And there are other memorials being explored – including, believe it or not, a full-size wax figure. (The Selina in the picture, though, isn’t it.)

HBO, 11:00 p.m. ET

Please, John Oliver, make me laugh. After this week, I need it. But after this week, how is 30 minutes of recap possibly enough? And, by the way, what a dumb week for Showtime’s The Circus to have pulled up stakes and packed its tent for the season…
