BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

Last night’s two-hour Playoffs Round had Jennifer Hudson, then Blake Shelton, guiding their six-person teams to emotional and challenging performances, then slicing those teams in half. Hudson made the right choices, selecting the most electrifying or captivating singers from her group – and so did Shelton, from his, including Chloe Kohanski, pictured, performing a smartly subdued version of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time.”  (Well, I correctly identified all six singers who advanced, so I’m biased.) That means there are six formidable competitors, so far, heading to next week’s live shows. And tonight, another judge, either Miley Cyrus or Adam Levine, has to halve his or her squad after coaching them to, and watching them, perform.

ABC, 8:00 p.m. ET

As current ABC sitcoms go, Modern Family may own Halloween, but The Middle has just as firm a hold on Thanksgiving. This Midwestern family has grown a lot over the years – the kids, physically as well as emotionally – and gathering them around the holiday table has both measured and showcased those annual growth spurts. And then, of course, there are the visiting relatives… Except this year, the Hecks are the visitors, taking a holiday road trip to visit Frankie’s sister for Thanksgiving, a voyage destined to have its share of detours. Welcome to an annual TV event that, like “Treehouse of Horror” on The Simpsons, is marked by titles with Roman numerals. Yes, tonight on The Middle, it’s “Thanksgiving IX.”

NBC, 9:00 p.m. ET

According to NBC, tonight’s This Is Us is the first of three special episodes about “the big three.” And if you don’t know what – or, more accurately, who – the “big three” are, then you haven’t bee watching. But if you have, you’ll be ready, as one of the trio of siblings is invited back to high school to receive a tribute.

NBC, 10:00 p.m. ET

SERIES FINALE: This is the eighth and final part of this True Crime installment of Law & Order, which has tried, though not overwhelmingly succeeded, to match the quality and excitement of such limited series, based on true crimes, as FX’s The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. But it does have Edie Falco, and whenever she’s on screen, that’s pretty much enough.

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

Last week, I identified that night’s episode as the finale of the Cult story line of American Horror Story. Then I tuned in to watch the ending, and boy, was I surprised. Not by the ending, but by the realization that it wasn’t the ending. Sorry. For some reason, I was convinced Cult would conclude after 10 episodes. Nope. It’s still going – and tonight, the new episode is called “Great Again.”

USA, 10:00 p.m. ET

Last week’s series premiere of this Depression-era drama, a more modern Western about farmers, strikebreakers, and roving gunmen (and gunwomen), was memorably violent, surprising, and populated with mysterious and intriguing characters. Is Damnation worth a second look? Given the premiere’s execution, and its title – hell, yes.
