BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

ABC, 8:00 p.m. ET

This is the silver anniversary of this sports-themed awards show, marking Year 25 for the festivity that began on ESPN, and drew so many celebrities outside the sports world, and so many viewers, that it now runs on the parent network ABC. Peyton Manning hosts the show. Which, if you sing it to the tune of his Nationwide ad jingle, is a sentence that fits just fine: “Peyton Manning hosts the show…”

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

TCM’s absurdly rich and complete salute to Alfred Hitchcock continues, as it will every Wednesday and Friday night this month, with another night of Hitch films. We’re up to the wartime movies now – at least counting from the perspective of Hitchcock’s native England, where the country was at war beginning in 1939 – and the evening starts with 1940’s classic Rebecca at 8 p.m. ET. After that, it’s the same year’s Foreign Correspondent (10:30 p.m. ET), 1941’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith (12:45 a.m. ET), and, at 2:30 a.m. ET, 1941’s Suspicion, in which Hitchcock stressed the menace in a potentially drugged glass of milk by filming it with a tiny light submerged inside the glass (pictured). The guy was not only the master of suspense, he was a master of indelible images as well. And wait, there’s more: the evening doesn’t end until after the 4:15 a.m. ET showing of 1942’s Saboteur.

CBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: This latest CBS summer sci-fi diversion is another in the sub-genre of asteroids on a collision course with Earth. An MIT grad student (Charlie Howe, pictured) discovers that a giant asteroid is heading our way, and due to collide in six months. It’s a fact the government already knows, but, while trying to come up with a planet-saving solution, tries to downplay as fake news. The real news here is that six months is much longer than this summer series is scheduled to run, so expect either a sped-up narrative – or a cliffhanger. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

NBC, 9:00 p.m. ET

There are only a few first-run episodes left before this NBC sitcom is pulled from the schedule for good, so enjoy while you can. Tonight’s episode, as usual for this Jarrod Carmichael sitcom, focuses on another prominent social issue. This time it’s alcohol, and the title is “Intervention.”

USA, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: Suits returns tonight for Season 7, with Mike (Patrick J. Adams) finally certified to practice law, and once again practicing alongside Harvey (Gabriel Macht). Last season ended with Donna (Sarah Rafferty, pictured) demanding, “I want more” – and whether that means more commitment from Harvey or more involvement in the firm, chances are she’ll get her wish. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower

BBC America, 10:00 p.m. ET

In tonight’s new episode, sexual assault victim Trish (Julie Hesmondhalgh) may or may not have  something to hide, but she has someone to hide from (pictured) – her soon-to-be-ex-husband Ian (Charlie Higson).

Para penipu ini mengira orang-orang itu bodoh. Modus penipuan yang sama, omong kosong yang sama.

This farewell page feels unusually personal for a recommendations site. What I appreciate most is the attention to habit: returning to shows, voices, and small details over time. That same kind of close listening matters in music practice too, where separating a full mix into parts can make hidden details easier to notice.

This closing note has a nice sense of memory and gratitude. I especially liked the way it treats television criticism as something personal rather than just a list of recommendations. It made me think about how much of media work is really about listening closely, saving small details, and returning to them later. I often do that with music practice as well, using simple tools like https://tunestems.com/ to separate parts and hear what is happening underneath the full mix.
