THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

CBS, 8:25 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: So, so much of CBS’s fortunes, literally and figuratively, are riding on the success of this brand-new Thursday night football franchise. CBS, until January, even is shifting its top-rated Big Bang Theory back to Mondays to make room – room for a new NFL showcase CBS hopes will rival NBC’s most-watched Sunday Night Football, room for hours and hours of premium-priced Thursday night ads keyed to weekend moviegoing, room for a ready-made platform to launch CBS’s new fall season shows, and so on. This opening game for CBS is between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens – normally a worthwhile ratings draw on its own merits. But with the Ravens and the NFL busily embroiled in the Ray Rice domestic violence case, that’s got to be addressed as well. And it was, on the new CBS-dominated Inside the NFL series on Showtime two days ago, if that’s any indication of what’s to come tonight.

Lifetime, 9:00 p.m. ET

Here’s an interesting challenge: For this week’s contest among the fashion designers, Project Runway turns on the sprinkler system above its models and turns the place, and the show, into “Project Rainway.” What sort of waterproof garb will the designers concoct for the occasion?

 
  
 
 
GARFUNKEL AND OATES

IFC, 10:00 p.m. ET

The main plot line in tonight’s episode is about a legalized marijuana dispensary – but watch for an extended cameo by  “Weird” Al Yankovic. He performed onstage with Garfunkel & Oates three years ago – but tonight, as their characters on the show, they “meet” him for the first time. And though they’re big fans, he’s not impressed… at least not by their choice of stage names.

 
  
 
 
THE HONORABLE WOMAN

Sundance, 10:00 p.m. ET

This is the penultimate episode of the series – so as things get more intense and complicated for Nessa (Maggie Gyllenhaal), they get more intense and complicated for viewers as well. This is one limited series that has made good use of every hour, evolving its story deliberately, but very, very surely.

 
  
 
 
HAVEN

Syfy, 10:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: Season 5 of Haven begins with what amounts to a reboot of the series, with town heroine Audrey (Emily Rose) taken over by her evil ancestor Mara, who spends the opening hour terrorizing everyone in town and trying to harness the power of the Troubles she once created. It gives Rose the chance to bloom, in a bad-girl role quite at odds with the character she’s played thus far.
