SPECIAL: Many times, when a Tony host such as Neil Patrick Harris or James Corden shows up and makes a strong impression, there’s a good chance he or she will be invited back for an encore the following year. But last year, the host of the Tonys was Kevin Spacey, so… that’s not happening. Instead, this year’s 72^nd annual Tony Awards is co-hosted by Josh Groban and Sara Bareillies.

This is episode two of this new series from Ryan Murphy and company, and the show’s trickiest part is over: introducing both the world and the leading characters of this particular New York subculture of the 1980s. The opener had its share of both triumphs and defeats, setting the stage for the protagonists, in the newly established competitive ballroom house known as Evangelista, to step forward.

Tonight’s episode spends time with characters who have been on the periphery, but key to certain points of the action, since this series began: the formidable, mysterious members of Ghost Nation.

SEASON FINALE: John Malkovich has shown up recently as a worthy, ruthless Russian adversary – and tonight he and Axe have one more serious round, as Axe reacts to the Russian’s sudden withdrawal of funds for Axe’s recovering financial operation.

SUCCESSION

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

As with FX’s Pose, this series had a lot to establish with last week’s premiere – and did so superbly, building the family dynamics of a wealthy and dysfunctional media baron and his various hangers-on and offspring. Frank Rich is one of this show’s executive producers, and it shows: This is one intelligent, sometimes wickedly funny drama series. If you’re already missing Showtime’s Patrick Melrose, stay tuned…

LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER

HBO, 11:00 p.m. ET

There may never be a slow news week again. But in the meantime, on many weeks such as this one, at least we have John Oliver to make sense of it all. And nonsense, too.
