BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

CBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

Neil Patrick Harris is the host of this show – for the third time – and there’s no reason to doubt that the third time’s the charm, since his previous two outings have been charming, too.  There’s a lot to watch for this year, including two potential locks by amazing actresses: Audra McDonald for The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, and, in drama, Nina Arianda for her standout power-play performance in Venus in Fur. Oh, and to prepare for the Tonys this year, watch 60 Minutes at 7 p.m. ET. There’s a special feature on last year’s big Tony winner, The Book of Mormon.

AMC, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: Part 1 of 2. This sounds kind of risky, at least on its surface: After receiving so much critical heat for not delivering a solution to its central murder last season, The Killing is presenting a two-part Season 2 finale – essentially stretching out things once again. I’ve stayed current with this AMC drama this season, and while it does seem to have honed in on some “final” prime suspects, there’s no denying that the number of red herrings and detours has made this series more of an obligation than a treat.

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: On the other hand, this returning series is a treat all the way – and begins just where last season left off, with characters dying, captured, cornered or otherwise panicked. For a full review, read my Bianculli’s Blog HERE.

AMC, 10:00 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: What a season. And, last week, what a shocker of a sudden tragedy at the office. How will the season of Mad Men end tonight? My guess: dramatically. And I really, really can’t wait to see it.

HBO, 10:30 p.m. ET

This series is getting less predictable, and thus more satisfying, as it nears the end of its first season. (HBO already has renewed the show for a Season 2.) The characters, by now firmly established, are starting to react in ways that demonstrate growth, or change, or at least a reckless sort of aimlessness. And tonight, there’s a noteworthy guest star as well: Michael Imperioli of The Sopranos, playing a former writing professor of Lena Dunham’s Hannah.
