BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

TBS, 5:30 p.m. ET

In yesterday’s Game 1, the Chicago Cubs fought valiantly against the St. Louis Cardinals, but the Cards’ one-run first-inning lead held up until the eighth inning, when the Cards added three more. The Cubs managed only three hits in the entire game – an offensive output that has to improve if the team hopes to even things with tonight’s Game 2, which starts at 5:30 p.m. ET. Then at 9 ET, also on TBS, it’s Game 2 of the New York Mets vs. Los Angeles Dodgers series. The Mets won the first game, 3-1, in a live telecast from Los Angeles that didn’t conclude on the East Coast until after midnight.

BBC America, 9:00 p.m. ET

Tonight’s episode is titled “I’m a Dead Man Walking,” and has our hero (Peter Capaldi) looking very much like a hollowed-eye spectre himself. Is there a Doctor in the haunted house?

BBC America, 10:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Game of Thrones has done so well with HBO, drawing viewers as well as earning acclaim and Emmys, that it’s no surprise that rival networks and TV producers are seeking to mount similar costume dramas set in centuries long ago. FX’s The Bastard Executioner, this season, is one, and now here’s another. It’s a British import set in the mid-800s.  And no, I didn’t drop a numeral there. This is another Vikings saga, this time from the British point of view. Rutger Hauer is featured as a Viking patriarch named Ravn, who’s part medieval, part plain evil. This first season is eight episodes long, and TVWW contributor Ed Bark likes what he’s seen. Read his full review in Uncle Barky’s Bytes.

BBC America, 11:15 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: Postponed by BBC America from last week, tonight’s episode really should be the new one with Matt Damon, kicking off Season 18 of this raucous British talk show. I said this last week, but it bears repeating: The last time Damon was on the show, alongside Mill Murray and Hugh Bonneville, he told Norton at the end it was the best time he’d ever had on a talk show.

NBC, 11:29 p.m. ET

The latest salvo in a very hot year that began with a superb third season of shows and a Peabody Award, tonight Amy Schumer guest hosts Saturday Night Live. The musical guest: The Weeknd. Considering the artist's odd spelling preference, perhaps this ought to be considered his premiere appearance on Saturdy Nght Lve. Personally, I can’t understand why anyone would want to embrace an unnecessary vowel movement. But that’s just me.

Great breakdown! Having well-written television like this makes evening downtime so much more engaging. When I'm taking a break between episodes or just relaxing after a long day of screen time, I usually unwind for a bit with a few casual rounds on [chicken road](https://chickenroad.gr.com/) before starting the next season. Really appreciate the thoughtful recommendations on this site!
