BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Amazon Prime Video, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: You might expect Upload, the new series coming from Greg Daniels, to be very funny and clever and wry – and it’s all of that. Daniels, after all, was the guy who cracked the code, and adapted the brilliant British version of The Office into what became its impressive American equal – surprising skeptical TV critics, including myself, in the process. Upload is about a young man who dies in a freak accident, but whose consciousness and personality are transferred into an avatar, which in turn resides in a posh digital afterlife designed and financed by his girlfriend’s family. She controls his afterlife “budget,” which in turn greatly affects his happiness. Meanwhile, back in the real world where she resides in the near future of 2033, there’s a computer programmer who coaches the young man on his transition to his new existence – and eventually, they fall in love, despite obstacles that seem absurdly challenging. So Upload is not only very funny, it’s a love story. And a mystery. And a social commentary on class differences and income inequality. And it’s very entertaining, starring two very likable leads: Robbie Amell as the ill-fated young man, and Andy Allo (pictured) as his personal sort of Siri. For my full review on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, listen to today’s show on air, or, later on, visit the Fresh Air website. And for a full review here at TVWW, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

Apple TV+, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Rafe Spall and Esther Smith star in this new comedy as Jason and Nikki, a young couple who discover they have infertility problems – and set out not only to enhance the frequency and passion of their lovemaking, but to explore other avenues, including adoption. All of which means they have to start seriously thinking of themselves as future parents, which is where the conflict and comedy in Trying resides.

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: When Ryan Murphy moved from FX to Netflix, this was the kind of series he and the streaming service had in mind. It’s glitzy, easily promotable, and aggressively “woke,” even though it’s set in 1930s Hollywood. As a tale of starlets and handsome young men with dreams of stardom, and of studio heads and scribes with their own ambitions and secrets, Hollywood feels very, very much like a modern version of Bracken’s World. But since hardly anyone remembers that 1969-70 TV series, Murphy may get away with it – and, as always, he finds ways to reward veteran actors with some truly juicy parts. In this case, the beneficiaries include Patti LuPone and Holland Taylor. Hollywood is no Feud: Bette and Joan, Murphy’s previous and much better foray into Hollywood lore, but, like its young cast, it looks good. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

Tonight’s virtual interview guests, so to speak, include one guest who used to visit Real Time all the time by actually showing up on set: Rolling Stone writer Matt Taibbi. These days, he just phones it in. But these days, that’s the norm…

BBC America, 11:00 p.m. ET

Among tonight’s not-in-person guests: Jeff Goldblum, who always seemed to love sharing the couch with other celebrities on Norton’s show (pictured, in pre-virus days). Here, the technology is making them do more traditional, one-on-one interviews. But, I guess, that prospect is more entertaining than one more Zoom chat…
