BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

Last night’s Cycle 10 opener ended with former child actress (and former drug abuser) Alisan Porter stepping up to sing “Blue Bayou,” and sparking a fierce battle among three of the judges. Porter eventually selected, as her judge and mentor, Christina Aguilera, which may set the stage for a female judge finally to win a Voice competition. It’s still early in the audition process, but Porter sure came out of the blocks with an attention-demanding debut.

ABC, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: The entire season has been building up to this – a showdown between Agent Carter and Whitney Frost, the Hollywood actress possessed with deadly “Dark Matter.” Tonight’s season finale brings out the big guns. Literally, with a new gamma ray pulse cannon designed, just in time, by Stark. The episode’s fitting title: “Hollywood Ending.”

Fox, 9:30 p.m. ET

This sitcom hasn’t caught on yet the way it should have, but every episode establishes more firmly that this show knows exactly what sort of meta tone it wants to project. Rob Lowe and Fred Savage work fabulously together, and the writers have made room for stronger and larger contributions from both the supporting cast and the guest stars. Timothy Olyphant, as himself, is especially funny and playful. Considering that his last two notable TV roles were as the star of Deadwood and Justified, Olyphant has pulled off a troika of excellent performances in excellent shows that very few actors ever get to experience.

NBC, 10:00 p.m. ET

There are other places to go for news of today’s election results from Super Tuesday, and I recommend bouncing back and forth among them all. Shift between Fox News and MSNBC, for example, to see how their respective analysts reveal their biases and concerns. Watch CNN to see how they use, and maybe overuse, their latest technological toys. At 10 p.m. ET, watch this NBC Super Tuesday special, the one with the best political reporters of the bunch, and flip on occasion to ABC and CBS, which have their own Super Tuesday specials at the same hour.

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

Episode 5. The court case in the title of this series finally begins tonight – but that’s not a complaint in either direction. Episodes to this point have featured intriguing behind-the-scenes examinations of the build-up and strategies to the trial – and from here on, we get a mix of the familiar (reenactments of the televised trial of O.J. Simpson) and tastes, again, of what is said and done behind closed doors. Tonight, watch for Johnnie Cochran (Courtney B. Vance) to step up in court, and take control.
