NEWS FLASH: 'Max Headroom'!
Should've known this would happen. I just duped a bunch of blurry old VHS-taped episodes with my DVD recorder. And now it's coming out on real, pre-recorded DVD. (Gotta try this trick with my other wants.)
Max Headroom has just been announced by the fine folks at Shout! Factory, the pop-culture preservationists who've brought us such wide-ranging treats as The Middleman, The Job, It's Garry Shandling's Show, thirtysomething, The Dick Cavett Show, Mister Ed and The Goldbergs (out March 16). Not to mention Kurt Russell's legendary Elvis TV movie (see review at right) and the crucial mid-'60s rockfest The T.A.M.I. Show (out March 23).
Max makes his move to DVD later this year -- in complete series form! -- after Shout assembles all sorts of bonus treats.
ABC's unique cyberpunk drama starred Matt Frewer, Amanda Pays and Jeffrey Tambor, and aired 1987-88, after the success of the original synthesized M-M-M-Max on Britain's Channel 4 and America's Cinemax. Frewer plays both the sarcastic virtual wag and good-guy TV reporter Edison Carter, employed by Network 23 in a Blade Runner-esque world where hundreds of corporate-owned channels are ruthlessly battling it out to lure viewers.
Yes! It was fiction then!
Read the Shout press release for more on the show. And rejoice. This one is fun.
P.S. -- Complete Larry Sanders Show just announced, too! Shout, we love you!

Could you please start transferring COP ROCK, season 2 - 5 of HILL STREET BLUES, and 2 - 6 of ST. ELSEWHERE? ANd while you're at it, transfer all of WISEGUY with the original song choices.
You're psychic, Greg -- I recently finished duping several episodes from EACH of those shows! So far, however, no luck on DVD.
Except that Wiseguy: The Collector's Edition is coming out March 9 from Mill Creek at a bargain price, just $45 list price ($34 from Amazon here) for 67 episodes on 13 discs. No original music, though -- and no Dead Dog Records arc, either, because the music in that one (Tim Curry/Deborah Harry) was too integral to even sub out.
Disappointing. But arguably better than nothing.
I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for series owner Stephen J. Cannell to pony up the $$ for the original songs. He has clearly indicated his preference for getting his shows on shelves (The Commish, Renegade, Hunter, Silk Stalkings), in affordable (rather than original) form.
Oh, man, I had forgotten all about Wiseguy -- Vinnie Terranova, right? I loved that show -- great music... Wasn't it Kevin Spacey who played the bad guy in one arc -- the one where he and his sister were the targets?
Oh, man, I had forgotten all about Wiseguy -- Vinnie Terranova... :-) One of the arcs I remember the most was the Kevin Spacey one. ...and yes, the music...
