Today's Blog Is Late -- But With a Great Excuse

Yesterday and last night, I taught my first classes of the new term at Rowan University in New Jersey. This morning and today, I flew to Los Angeles. And right now, in the middle of a mini-monsoon, I'm about to drive across town to attend the Emmy Hall of Fame ceremony, where Tom and Dick Smothers are among the honored inductees...

So that's why today's Best Bets were late, and why today's even later blog is so short. Tomorrow, more details. Right now, it's off to drive a rental car in the rain, with no GPS...

Welcome back to California. Please enjoy our quadrennial monsoon. Hope you took the "pontoons" option on your rental car. And as you're floating down [what's euphemistically called] the Los Angeles River, try to keep in mind that the next major drought-buster isn't scheduled till November 2014.

Behind David in the picture is the first TV owned by his father, Virgil Bianculli, a 1946 Raytheon. (The TV, not his father. His father was a 1923 Italian.)

David Bianculli has been a TV critic since 1975, including a 14-year stint at the New York Daily News, and sees no reason to stop now. Currently, he's TV critic for NPR's Fresh Air, occasional substitute host for that show's Terry Gross, and teaches TV and film history at New Jersey's Rowan University. His most recent book is 2009's Dangerously Funny: The Uncensored Story of 'The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour,' and he's at work on another.
