Re-Entry to Real Life: Today "Fresh Air," Tomorrow the World...
Burrowing out from my basement this week after completing my Smothers Brothers manuscript has proven trickier than expected. Today, for example, I resume my Friday duties as guest host for NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross. I'm even giving a report on today's analog-to-digital TV transition, so please tune in.
But I actually slept a few hours last night, which means I won't be able to post today's BIANCULLI'S BEST BETS, or my review of Sunday's season premiere of HBO's True Blood, until mid-afternoon. Forgive the tardiness, and please return.
Or, if you're that upset with the delay, you could cancel your monthly payment to TV WORTH WATCHING. Oh, wait. It's free...

Glad to hear you're getting some sleep, but whatever will I do without reading your recommendations? I've become almost worringly addicted to them and don't seem to be able to figure out what to watch on my own anymore! It'll be good to hear you on Fresh Air again though. (Thanks so much! Best Bets coming right up... -- David B.)
Can't wait for your report on the "transition". It apparently happened, and the world didn't end. Shades of Y2K. My little kitchen morning-evening news tv had to have a converter box installed. No big deal; got the government coupon, and purchased the box. What they fail to mention is that more than likely you'll also need a new antenna in addition to the box. I didn't have an issue as I knew this was a possibility, but I sympathize with the elderly who have been driven near crazy with the doomsday public service announcements. For those of us who are computer savvy, no problem at all getting the coupon, picking up the box, new antenna, hooking it all together, etc., etc. But I pity someone with mobility problems, no computer, no one to help them to install. Hopefully this will be something for the better good, and not just a ploy by the cable companies to scare the elderly into thinking they can't get tv without cable service.
On the up side, the tv reception is fantastic. Word of warning to all: until the channel bands, or whatever, are totally in-place, you'll need to scan & rescan for channels. It only takes a few minutes. Fortunately, WCBS-TV in NYC has done a daily update this week, and had an expert on explaining the whole sequence and what you can expect until things are nailed down.
Happy Father's Day, David. Glad your book is done, and you can catch a break.
You're right on the money about the digital transition's most likely "victims." That was my exact point in today's piece! -- David B.)
