Golden Globes: This Year, They Went Off Without a Strike

One year after the Golden Globes were dead on arrival -- but televised nonetheless by NBC -- the network got to present a strike-free, dazzle-rich awards ceremony, filling all four hours of its Sunday prime time, and then some.

The awards show spilled over a few minutes past the allotted 11 p.m. ET stop time. Blame Kate Winslet. She won twice -- once for The Reader, once for Revolutionary Road -- and, in her weepy excitement, hogged the mike both times...

I wrote a blog about the Globes for today's Broadcasting & Cable website. To avoid duplication, and allow me to get back to the Smothers Brothers book, please click HERE to read about Ricky Gervais, Mickey Rourke, January Jones and more.

I must say I really liked this years GGs. I mean I REALLY LIKED IT! I thought it was like taking a make-up test after you failed miserably and then getting an A. I actually agreed with the winners (for the most part keeping in mind I haven't seen all of the movies, YET!)

The show itself was a lot of fun. My highlights being Kate Winslet's speeches (I've been rooting for her since Titanic) and agree with everyone who liked it when Mickey Rourke thanked his dogs, past and present (being the animal person I am). Of course, for any filmmaker or wannabe filmmaker of my age Mr. Spielberg receiving the C.B. DeMille award was a big highlight. Then again ALL the "Thank you's" were worth watching and listening to without interruption.

On a fan bias note-Heath Ledger winning was the chocolate frosting on the cake (if you like frosting). Like Christopher Nolan said, "Heath will be missed, but never forgotten."
I know I loved every movie he was a part of.
So, good show, Hollywood Foreign Press.
Hopefully the rest of the season is just as good!

Behind David in the picture is the first TV owned by his father, Virgil Bianculli, a 1946 Raytheon. (The TV, not his father. His father was a 1923 Italian.)

David Bianculli has been a TV critic since 1975, including a 14-year stint at the New York Daily News, and sees no reason to stop now. Currently, he's TV critic for NPR's Fresh Air, occasional substitute host for that show's Terry Gross, and teaches TV and film history at New Jersey's Rowan University. His most recent book is 2009's Dangerously Funny: The Uncensored Story of 'The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour,' and he's at work on another.
