"Sex" Adjusts Opening-Week Total, But Winner Stays the Same Here

Somehow, when the final tally was made for the opening-weekend U.S. box-office receipts of Sex and the City, the total was adjusted from an estimated $55.7 million to an even more impressive $56.8. Somewhere, someone had temporarily misplaced $1.1 million in ticket sales...

What does this mean? For one thing, it dilutes my bragging rights somewhat, since I had predicted an opening-weekend take of $55 million. Now I'm not quite so "on the money," but hey, I'll take it.

The good news is, the enhanced take doesn't change the winner of our little TV Worth Watching reader contest here. Chris Jones, with a bid of $53 million, remains the person who bid closest without going over. Though now, with a bid of $57 million, another Chris, Chris Collins, came closest of any of us -- but went over by a paltry $200,000...

Congratulations, Chris. Sorry, Chris.

The Get Smart movie opens in a few weeks. Maybe we'll do this again...

So close! Somehow I'm pretty sure I'll survive though. It'd be fun to do it again for Get Smart, especially now that I know I was so close. Anyhow, thanks for the fun David!

(I do wonder how someone loses 1.1 million dollars, though)

not that big of a deal but i find it funny that they adjusted the weekend numbers again.... according to variety and boxofficemojo it's now $57,038,404. and it also had a big monday taking in 5.5 million. (You're right -- Variety has rounded the weekend take to $57 million -- so I'm going to give prizes to BOTH Chris guessers... Seems only fair. -- David B.)

That's very sporting of you David! Chris C. deserves it definitely. Being only $38,000 off is the equivalent of winning both showcases on Price is Right in comparison. Congrats Chris C!

Congrats to you too Chris! After all you were pretty close too! Although now I figure I should sit out for the Get Smart one so that someone else gets a chance to win! :)

Behind David in the picture is the first TV owned by his father, Virgil Bianculli, a 1946 Raytheon. (The TV, not his father. His father was a 1923 Italian.)

David Bianculli has been a TV critic since 1975, including a 14-year stint at the New York Daily News, and sees no reason to stop now. Currently, he's TV critic for NPR's Fresh Air, occasional substitute host for that show's Terry Gross, and teaches TV and film history at New Jersey's Rowan University. His most recent book is 2009's Dangerously Funny: The Uncensored Story of 'The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour,' and he's at work on another.
