BEST BETS FOR WEDNESDAY, JULY 1, 2009

THE NINE

DirecTV 101 Network, 7 & 10 p.m. ET

We’re getting closer and closer to the unaired episodes of this interesting ABC series, a sort of Rashomon in a bank heist, with characters thought to be villains, and heroes, betraying characteristics of their polar opposites.

AMERICAN MASTERS: GARRISON KEILLOR

PBS, 8 p.m. ET

(Check local listings)

Subtitled “The Man on the Radio in the Red Shoes,” this documentary tags along with Keillor as he goes about his day – for a year. The longtime Prairie Home Companion radio host calls his lengthy, beloved career path “a fortunate life,” and this doe-eyed study gives no reason to think otherwise.

ROBOCOP

IFC, 8 p.m. ET

Made in 1987, this sci-fi movie is directed by the predictably unpredictable Paul Verhoeven, which may be why it has survived to become a somewhat iconic piece of fantasy cinema. Peter Weller stars.

BONES

TNT, 8 p.m. ET

Two recent episodes are repeated tonight on TNT, and both involve a sort of dress-up play: the first is a Halloween episode, and the second, the most recent season finale, presents its central characters as a loving couple in a dapper nightclub setting. Why? The setting, and the secret, are revealed at the end.

THE PHILANTHROPIST

NBC, 10 p.m. ET

NBC is promoting this new series, which premiered last week, as the #1 New Drama Series of the Summer. That’s funnier than most NBC comedies. What, on all of broadcast TV, qualifies as #2? Merlin? But watch anyway, if only for the scenery – this week from Myanmar.

JAWS

HBO2, 10 p.m. ET

Everyone has his or her own marking for the start of summer. For some, it’s the first day of summer as noted on the calendar. For others, the first sighting of fireflies. For me, it’s the first seasonal telecast of Jaws, the ultimate summer movie. Every year, I watch. Every year, it works.
