BEST BETS FOR SUNDAY, SEPT. 21, 2008

60 MINUTES

CBS, 7 p.m. ET

When this venerable series premiered 40 years ago, one of its inaugural features was a pair of profiles with then-presidential nominees Richard Nixon and Hubert Humphrey. Tonight's episode, though not the year's official premiere, offers a modern point-counterpoint. Scott Pelley interviews John McCain, while Steve Kroft interviews Barack Obama.

60th ANNUAL PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS

ABC, 8 p.m. ET

The quintet of reality-show host nominees, including Heidi Klum, sharing host duties on tonight’s Emmys should make it interesting, as should the wide net of nominated shows and performers. Also, look for Josh Groban to sing a medley of TV theme songs – and, since this basically is a show honoring the birh of television, expect some nice surprises that are nods to TV’s history.

YANKEES BASEBALL

ESPN, 8 p.m. ET

Unless the New York Yankees find a way to extend their 208 fortunes into the postseason, which is highly unlikely, this contest, the last of a home stand against the Baltimore Orioles, will be the last Yankees game played at the current Yankee Stadium, the house that Ruth built. ESPN will be there, and any Yankee fans should be, too.

TRUE BLOOD

HBO, 9 p.m. ET

In this third episode, Jason is in dire need of medical aid – not because he’s lost blood, but because he’s ingested too much. Vampire blood, that is. Meanwhile, Sookie and Bill keep seeing each other, and circling each other – warily.

MAD MEN

AMC, 10 p.m. ET

The show may be named after men, but it’s the women who are doing most of the aggressive acts in tonight’s episode – including Joan, Betty and Peggy.

ENTOURAGE

HBO, 10 p.m. ET

No, this car isn’t the new Knight Rider vehicle. It’s Ari’s new gift, presented to him by his wife – which he immediately takes out for a very aggressive spin.
