NFL FOOTBALL: PATRIOTS VS. DOLPHINS

CBS, 4 p.m. ET
(Check local listings)
WE, 8 p.m. ET

The Miami Dolphins won its first game of the season last Sunday in overtime, which brings them to a showdown with the undefeated New England Patriots that is just one loss away from a polar-opposite dream match: the 14-0 Pats vs. the 0-14 Dolphins. But now that the Dolphins have tasted victory (first meal of the year) and are 1-13, the team's challenge today is to preserve the memory of the 1972 Dolphins as the only undefeated pro football team - and to do it, all the 2007 Dolphins have to do is beat the Patriots. The Dolphins are three-touchdown underdogs - but this will be an emotional game, no matter what happens. And it offers either one step closer to perfection for the Patriots, or one colossal upset for Miami. Either way, it demands watching.

Bert and Ernie

ELMO'S CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN

ABC, 7 p.m. ET

Hey, look - they do make Christmas specials like they used to! This new one features Elmo and the rest of the Sesame Street gang saving the day, and the day in question just happens to be Christmas. Human guest stars, in addition to the familiar furry faces, include Alicia Keys, Sheryl Crow and Charles Gibson. Oh, and one great skit that might have even humbuggy viewers want to tune in: Bert and Ernie from Sesame Street direct two actors dressed as them, and attempting to impersonate them. The actors? Steve Schirripa and Tony Siroco, who played Bobby and Paulie on The Sopranos.

Amazing Race

AMAZING RACE 12

CBS, 8 p.m. ET

The team of Ron and Christina, despite all his incessant talking and her constant frustration, are in first place for this leg of the race - and there aren't that many legs left. And look who's in second place right now: the magenta-haired Goths, Kynt and Vyxsin. I Kynt believe they got this far.

The Archbishop of Cantebury

IN GOD'S NAME

CBS, 9 p.m. ET

One of the first and best documentaries about the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001, the CBS special 9/11, was directed by Jules and Gedeon Naudet, who were at the wrong place - very close to Ground Zero - doing a documentary on firefighters when the hijacked plane slammed into the first tower. In this new documentary, they explain that they kept asking themselves a simple but gnawing question: Where was God that day? In God's Name is the result. The Naudet brothers visited and interviewed a dozen religious and spiritual leaders, asking the meaning of life, the universe and everything to such figures as the Archbishop of Canterbury (head of the Church of England), Rabbi Yona Metzger (chief rabbi of Israel), the Dalai Lama, Pope Benedict XVI, and the Grand Ayatollah Muhammad Hussein Fadlallah (a Shiite Muslim).

Prime Suspect

MASTERPIECE THEATRE:
"PRIME SUSPECT: THE FINAL ACT"

PBS, 9 p.m. ET
(Check local listings)

A repeat, but a great one: With this concluding installment of this two-part drama, the seventh in a series of mysteries featuring Helen Mirren as Jane Tennison, the grand Dame says farewell to her police inspector character. Fabulous series, astounding performance, and very influential role.

Trading Places

TRADING PLACES

Comedy Central, 9 p.m. ET

Eddie Murphy pops off the screen in this 1983 comedy, just as he did in 48 HRS. - but he's not the only one having a great time, and leaving a bold mark, in this John Landis movie. Dan Aykroyd, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ralph Bellamy and Don Amache all have a blast, and make this movie - about tycoons making a bet that changes the lives of two young men (pampered Aykroyd and streetwise Murphy).
