BEST BETS FOR DECEMBER 21, 2007

Fergie

A HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

CBS, 8 p.m. ET

This ninth annual TV special, aimed at raising adoption awareness, has developed its own family as it strives to create others. Sheryl Crow performs tonight for the third time - but the first since she herself adopted a baby boy. Also performing tonight, in the singing sections of this one-hour program: Fergie, James Blunt, Carole King and Reba McEntire.

Notting Hill

NOTTING HILL

Bravo, 8 p.m. ET

Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts are teamed in this very likable romantic comedy-drama about a famous movie star who disrupts the life of a sky bookseller. Which one plays which in this 1999 film? Roberts is the diva, Grant is the bookworm - and watch for the young girl playing the part described as the 12-year-old actress. She's Mischa Barton, but she was a bit older than 12: only four years later, she would land the female lead on The O.C.

George of the Jungle

GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE

Cartoon Network, 8 p.m. ET

Cartoon Network is giving viewers a sneak preview tonight of this new animated series, which premieres officially in January. Why does this get a spot among the TV offerings most worthy of note this evening? Because, even though it's sight unseen, it's the first cartoon officially sanctioned by the estate of Jay Ward, creator of Rocky & Bullwinkle and George of the Jungle, and Ward's own daughter is involved in the production. George is thinner this time around, but he still has Ursula, Ape and his elephant Shep as companions. Why mess with success?

Dark Victory

DARK VICTORY

TCM, 8 p.m. ET

Bette Davis stars in this famous 1939 tearjerker, playing a beautiful woman who suffers from an inoperable brain tumor. The men in her life are played by, among others, George Brent, Humphrey Bogart... and Ronald Reagan.

40 Year Old Virgin

THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN

USA, 8 p.m. ET

Judd Apatow, who wrote this 2005 comedy movie script with star Steve Carell, went on to direct Knocked Up, featuring many of the same players from this very funny film - including Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd and Apatow's wife, Leslie Mann. The waxing scene, by the way, was very real... and, Apatow and Rogen told me once on Fresh Air, totally improvised.

Cries and Whispers

CRIES AND WHISPERS

Sundance Channel, 8:30 p.m. ET

Sundance Channel is saluting Ingmar Bergman tonight, with a prime-time triple feature that promises lots of brooding, lots of stunning photography, and plenty of strong performances by beautiful women. This 1972 drama, starring Liv Ullman, is the centerpiece of the triple feature. It's prefaced, at 7 p.m. ET, by 1966's influential Persona, also starring Ullman. And it's followed, at 10 p.m., by a mood-changing dessert: a Bergman comedy from 1955, Smiles of a Summer Night.
