BEST BETS FOR DECEMBER 19, 2007

Carole Lombard

NOTHING SACRED

TCM, 8 p.m. ET

Carole Lombard stars in this 1937 screwball comedy, and is wonderful, but I'm as interested in the writers who worked on various phases of this troubled production. Ben Hecht started it, adapting an existing story about a newspaper, and other writers who came in to polish or finish the job included Dorothy Parker, Ring Lardner Jr., and Budd Schulberg. Fredric March co-stars.

Scene from Independence Day

INDEPENDENCE DAY

Fox Movie Channel, 8 p.m. ET

Will Smith just broke box office records - again - with his opening weekend of I Am Legend. This 1996 movie, released intentionally on the 4th of July, was one of the films that cemented his blockbuster status. As a movie star who can bring people through the turnstiles at the movie houses, Smith, right now, is unparalleled, But 11 years ago, he had some help, from Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum in particular.

Wired Science

WIRED SCIENCE

PBS, 8 p.m. ET
(Check local listings)

One of the stories in tonight's fast-paced hour is "Space Junkyard," where today's scientists get valuable insights - and equally valuable spare parts - by going to a very surprising source. What better way to save money building and designing a modern rocket than to... carefully extract and examines the parts and switches from inside an old Saturn V?

Ricky Gervais

EXTRAS: THE EXTRA SPECIAL SERIES FINALE

HBO, 8:30 p.m. ET

This was unveiled by HBO on Sunday - but if you missed it, perhaps being distracted by the Survivor: China finale or something else, here's a golden opportunity to watch it tonight. And watch for, among other things, Gordon Ramsay shouting ay Ricky Gervais' poor Andy Millman, and Clive Owen - well, just watch for Clive Owen, and be prepared to laugh, deeply and a bit uneasily.

Bend it like Beckham

BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM

Oxygen, 8:30 p.m. ET

This 2002 movie, a mere five years ago, launched the career of co-star Keira Knightly, who, after this film was released, became a star virtually overKnightly. Yet it's Parminder K. Nagra, as the girl who so badly wants to join her school soccer team, who's really at the center of this warm family comedy-drama.

The Monkees

BIOGRAPHY: "THE MONKEES"

Biography Channel, 10 p.m. ET

Hey, hey, they're the Monkees - and all four of them (Mike Nesmith, Davy Jones, Peter Tork and Mickey Dolenz) share the spotlight in this new Biography profile of the young performers recruited to star in NBC's homegrown American version of The Beatles and A Hard Day's Night. The amazing thing is, it worked - and generated some pretty catchy music to boot.
