BEST BETS FOR DECEMBER 13, 2007

Survivor

SURVIVOR: CHINA

CBS, 8 p.m. ET

Tonight is the penultimate episode of this cycle of Survivor, which means, in general, that alliances are about to be shattered as the remaining contestants position themselves for a shot at Sunday's final. It also means, specifically, that some of tonight's players get a really Great reward: Great, as in a visit to the Great Wall of China. As for the word penultimate, that's another story. It means next to last, but since it takes longer to say than "next to last," why does it persist? This item may be the penultimate time I use it.

Smallville

SMALLVILLE

CW, 8 p.m. ET

I note the presence of this show not necessarily because I feel it's necessarily one of the six best things to watch on TV tonight, but because original episodes of this series have been missing in action for a while. So this one, in which Chloe is turned into a walking time bomb and Lex is threatened, is worth noting on a week when many shows are going into reruns, not coming out of them.

30 Rock

30 ROCK

NBC, 8:30 p.m. ET

Here's a holiday episode not to miss. Imagine a holiday gathering at which Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Andy Richter, Buck Henry, Anita Gillette and Elaine Stritch are all seated around the same table. Now stop imagining, because Fey and the other 30 Rock writers have imagined it for you. Gillette and Henry play Liz's parents, Richter returns as her very strange brother, and Stritch is reprising her guest role as the feisty mother of Baldwin's Jack. And why not? The last time she played the role, she won an Emmy.

Supernatural

SUPERNATURAL

CW, 9 p.m. ET

Another show presenting a fresh episode in the midst of repeats, and this episode is being singled out because it's so... twisted. If Santa Claus was based on a Saint Nick, and saints have their counterparts in sinners, this episode is about a holiday spirit who's deadly, scary and essentially the anti-Santa. After all, what is Santa but an anagram of Satan? Just asking.

Festivus

SEINFELD

TBS, 9 p.m. ET

For the rest of us, it's Festivus - the holiday spawned by Seinfeld, and repeated tonight on TBS as the first present in a gift-wrapped evening of holiday episodes about Jerry and company.

SNL

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE CHRISTMAS

NBC, 9:30 p.m. ET

This special is a five-year-old repeat - but since we haven't seen a first-run Saturday Night Live since November 3, it's a welcome holiday offering. Adam Sandler sings, Eddie Murphy celebrates a special "Mister Robinson" Christmas, Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon co-host, and Fey's not the only 30 Rock cast member featured on this 90-minute program. Also appearing: frequent SNL guest host Alec Baldwin, as the spokesman for that memorable holiday taste treat, "Schweddy balls."
