SERIES PREMIERE: This series, based on a true story, has enticing talent both in front of and behind the camera. It’s the story of a young girl who claims to be the victim of an assault, but the lack of physical proof and other evidence leads her to be dismissed by authorities – until years later, when a team of investigators links her case to similar assaults on single women elsewhere. The initial victim, Marie, is played by Kaitlyn Dever, whom
Justified fans will remember (and be unable to forget) as the resourceful and resilient backwoods girl Loretta. The investigators who eventually pick up Marie’s cold case are played by two other unforgettable actresses: Merritt Wever, who played Zoey in Showtime’s
Nurse Jackie and Mary Agnes in the Netflix Western
Godless, and Toni Collette, who played so many entertaining roles on Showtime’s
The United States of Tara. And behind the scenes, the writers include
Erin Brockovich screenwriter Susannah Grant (who also directs a couple episodes) and
Wonder Boys author Michael Chabon, and the directors include Michael Dinner of
Justified and
The Wonder Years, and Lisa Cholodenko of
Olive Kitteridge and
The Kids Are All Right. So worth watching? Absolutely.
