Tonight’s “Out of This World” film voyage on TCM begins with two incomparably influential sci-fi dramas. First is this 1960 classic, adapting the H.G. Wells novel into a marvel of day-glo, futuristic fantasy. Rod Taylor stars as H. George Wells (yes, you read that right), and the most memorable alien he encounters in this galactic class-warfare story is Weena, played by Yvette Mimieux.

Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film is a movie masterpiece of the first order. Conceptually, it’s one of the best movies ever made – and the fact that we can watch it more than 50 years later and still marvel at it, and accept its imagined future, is as remarkable as anything it shows on screen.
