BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Fox, 8:00 p.m. ET

Sometimes the heroes in TV shows are pitted against straw men, but this week, as the Gotham origin story lines continue, that’s taken more literally than usual. The villain? The Scarecrow.

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

Robert E. Sherwood adapted MacKinlay Kantor’s novel for the big screen in this powerful 1946 drama, which, one year after WWII was over, dramatized the plight of returning war veterans, and the impact of that war on both the veterans and their loved ones. Think of it, if you like, as a previous-generation character study on par with American Sniper, mounting with haunting sensitivity by director William Wyler. Dana Andrews, Fredric March and Harold Russell star, and watch for singer-songwriter Hoagy Carmichael as Butch.

Fox, 9:00 p.m. ET

We’re getting used to seeing founding fathers on this show, and tonight, here comes another one: Thomas Jefferson, played by guest star Steven Weber.

PBS, 10:00 p.m. ET

Part 3 of 3. In tonight’s concluding installment, New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof presents such globe-trotting, problem-spotlighting segments as Regina Hall visiting a battered women’s shelter in Atlanta, Mia Farrow and Rowan Farrow in Kenya, supporting an organization protecting young women in Kiberia. Check local listings.

AMC, 10:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Part 2 of 2. If you missed last night’s Part 1, and didn’t record it, don’t panic: AMC is repeating Part 1 tonight, with the unusual starting time of 8:45 p.m. ET, so that it can conclude just in time to lead into the premiere of tonight’s Part 2, starting at 10 ET. Don’t miss it: Part 1 ended with a cliffhanger, and tonight’s Part 2 picks up right where the first episode left off, with a tension-filled, and laughter-filled, episode that proves why you better watch Better Call Saul. For my full review, and a link to my radio review on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, see Bianculli’s Blog.
