BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

CBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

Made in 1964, this holiday special is now officially 50 years old – all spruced up and restored, and presented in a let-it-breathe one-hour time slot, for this golden anniversary showcase. Burl Ives narrates, and sings the title song.

CW, 8:00 p.m. ET

Getting closer to the truth of the origin story of The Flash, and to the murder of Barry’s mother, tonight’s episode introduces a different-colored fast-moving blur – known to DC Comics fans as Reverse-Flash.

ABC, 9:00 p.m. ET

Last week’s episode had a lot of action, a lot of conflict, a sense of humor, and some character development. In other words, this series is finding its footing, and its way, in Season 2, and tonight there’s a major confrontation regarding the secrets hidden within the subterranean mystery city. It’s a mystery that, tonight, leads to some solutions, some showdowns – and to our first TV glimpse of a particular alien race from the Marvel universe.

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

SERIES FINALE: Last week’s episode was, to put it mildly, full of surprises. Not only the plot developments that were presented and wrapped up in unexpectedly accelerated fashion, but the unannounced and unexpected guest appearances by Michael Chiklis and, making a masterful return appearance as Gemma’s dad, Hal Holbrook. Holbrook, apparently, is capable of nothing but slam-dunk killer performances these days, no matter the size of the role.  And after last week’s expanded episode, in which all that blood was spilled, there’s a lot of mopping up to do (so to speak) in tonight’s Shakespearean, Oedipal series finale.

Comedy Central, 11:30 p.m. ET

Stephen Colbert is calling it quits this month on The Colbert Report, so he can step in behind David Letterman’s desk as the next host of Late Show on CBS. Meanwhile, the next host of The Late Late Show, set to replace Craig Ferguson next year, is James Corden, who happens to be Colbert’s guest tonight on The Colbert Report. Wonder of they’ll find anything in common to talk about?
