BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

CBS, 10:30 a.m. ET

Today, Face the Nation is celebrating its TV anniversary, and it’s even more than a golden one. The CBS public affairs program premiered in 1954, 60 years ago, with a program featuring Sen. Joe McCarthy, about to be censured by the Senate for his abusive Communist witch-hunt tactics. The guests for today’s anniversary show are much more venerable: former President George W. Bush, and current President Barack Obama. And the host, of course, is Bob Schieffer, who’s been moderating this series since 1991 – which means he’s been at the helm for more than a third of this show’s entire run.

Fox, 8:00 p.m. ET

Already this season, Fox has given us a crossover episode of The Simpsons and The Family Guy, which ended up being the funniest Family Guy in years. Tonight, it presents another, even more incestuous crossover: a Simpsons episode featuring characters from Matt Groening’s other animated series, the recently cancelled Futurama. I’ll be watching – and I know Chris Spurgeon will, too. He was the original webmaster of this site when it launched, and was, and I’m sure remains, a major Futurama fan. Hi, Chris! Enjoy.

CBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

Last week’s episode introduced David Hyde Pierce to the cast, and tonight’s episode makes room for another familiar recurring player, Michael J. Fox. How wonderful is this show? As good as its cast – and on TV right now, there is none better. And the ending to last week’s show? Another stunner, on a show that delivers them with confident regularity.

AMC, 9:00 p.m. ET

Very cleverly, this series has benefited this season from branched-off episodes – plots and characters that are isolated from the main narrative, yet not unrelated, or uninvolving on their own. Last week’s episode exemplified that, with a gripping hour picking up on the story of Beth (Emily Kinney), who woke up in a hospital unaware of her surroundings or condition – just like Rick in the series premiere. And after a harrowing hour (including a tense and harrowing scene involving a … lollipop), last week’s episode ended with a surprise that’s sure to propel tonight’s episode.

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE This Aaron Sorkin show returns for one final mini-season, and showcases star Jeff Daniels, as anchor Will McAvoy, the same week he returns to the big screen in the long-dormant sequel to Dumb and Dumber.

Showtime, 9:00 p.m. ET

Last week, I wrote that Homeland has rebounded strongly this season. Then I saw the show televised that night, and wow. That wasn’t a rebound. That was a slam dunk, and the sudden surprise it served up was one of those plot-changing stunners that typified this show’s first, best season. Welcome back, Homeland.

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be actually something which I think I would never understand. It seems too complex and extremely broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!
