BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

CBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

Tonight’s episode is called “The Relaxation Integration,” and has Amy trying to persuade Sheldon to lighten up and choose a wedding date – two things of which he seems equally incapable.

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

The blind auditions continue – and if it seems like it takes longer these days for the coaches to assemble their teams, that’s because the producers of The Voice are aware that this opening round of competitions is among the viewers’ favorites. So why not take more time? Or, in this case, a third week of prime time? For a look at new judge Jennifer Hudson's impact on the show, see Alex Strachan's TV That Matters.

CW, 8:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: This is the Season 3 premiere of this DC Comics action series. It began on CBS, where it was an uneasy fit, and moved to sister network CW last year, where other DC Comics adaptations, such as The Flash and Arrow, reside comfortably. This season, Kara (Melissa Benoist) is suffering from her big emotional loss at the end of last season – and decides, this year, to suppress rather than embrace her non-Kryptonian humanity. For a look at the new season, and Chris Wood (Mon-El), see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

Fox, 9:00 p.m. ET

Stick with this series. Just when it seemed like superhero TV series had run out of steam, FX gave us Legion last season, and now Fox gives us The Gifted – two very smart dramas based on minor characters from the Marvel comics universe. Last week’s premiere episode of The Gifted did a fine job establishing both characters and conflicts – and tonight’s second episode deepens both of those explorations, with an episode as strong on exciting special effects as it is on dramatic character development. And for now, the various characters have yet to unite: some are under siege, another is in government custody, and yet another, Polaris (pictured), is imprisoned, and saddled with an electronic “flea collar” that inhibits her use of her paranormal powers.

Cinemax, 9:55 p.m. ET

This movie, from 1989, is an exciting psychological thriller, largely set at sea and focused on three isolated characters: a man and his wife, taking a remote ocean voyage to try and heal their marriage, and a literal drifter whom they discover, and rescue, while far, far from land. The drifter is played by Billy Zane, and he turns out to be dangerous. The couple is played by Sam Neill and, in one of her first roles, Nicole Kidman – who is positively captivating here. It’s a very exciting, disturbing drama, one that will stay with you for a long time. For me, it’s been 28 years and counting…
