NFL WILD-CARD ROUND: KANSAS CITY CHIEFS VS. HOUSTON TEXANS

ABC, 4:30 p.m. ET

The first games of the 2016 NFL postseason are played this weekend. Today are the two wild-card games on the AFC side, and tomorrow are the two wild-card games from the NFC. The action begins today at 4:30 p.m. ET, when Kansas City faces Houston. The Chiefs ended the season by winning 10 in a row, but the Texans did well to end its season, too, especially against divisional opponents.

 
  
 
 
NFL WILD-CARD ROUND: PITTSBURGH STEELERS VS. CINCINNATI BENGALS

CBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

The second football game played today features the Pittsburgh Steelers, who didn’t make it to the postseason until after the dust settled on the last day of the regular season, facing the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals haven’t won a playoff game in 25 years, so both teams are feeling a bit hungry. And lucky.

Discovery, 8:00 p.m. ET

One of my favorite sketches from the old SCTV show featured Joe Flaherty and John Candy as hayseed farmers presiding over the “Farm Film Report,” where all they cared about was whether something in a movie “blowed up real good.” Boy, they would have loved this new Mythbusters episode in particular: It’s called “The Explosion Special,” and in it, lots and lots of things blow up real good.

 
  
 
 
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD

HBO, 8:00 p.m. ET

George Miller, who directed young Mel Gibson in the original Australian hit Mad Max in 1979, went back to his roots, and his country, to film this 2015 action film – which eschewed a lot of CGI effects by trying to film most stunts as naturally as possible. Tom Hardy and Cherize Theron star.

 
  
 
 
YANKEE DOODLE DANDY

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

Most of the films chosen by TCM as being worthy of the name “The Essentials” are inarguable examples of just that. Take, for example, the movie presented tonight by Robert Osborne and Sally Field: 1942’s Yankee Doodle Dandy, James Cagney’s endlessly energetic biography of master showman George M.
