BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

AXS TV, 7:25 p.m. ET

Part of an all-day Elton John salute beginning at noon ET on AXS, this 2014 film captures the musician’s preparation for and presentation of his second multi-year residency at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. Before or after you see Rocketman in theaters, it’s a fitting, fun companion piece.

MGM HD, 7:40 p.m. ET

Writer-director David Lynch’s 1986 movie, the one that cemented his reputation as a boldly surreal and dreamy visionary, still emits the same aura of walking, waking nightmare. But 33 years later, a full third of a century, it’s amazing to watch again and see how youthful and dynamic the cast appears – especially young leads Kyle Maclachlan, Isabella Rossellini and Laura Dern. Dennis Hopper and Dean Stockwell nail the deviant vibe Lynch is so fond of exploring, and other cast members to note include future Twin Peaks player Jack Nance (who already had starred in Lynch’s Eraserhead) and, on screen at the piano, future Twin Peaks composer Angelo Badalamenti.

HBO, 8:00 p.m. ET

The latest incarnation of A Star Is Born, directed and co-written by star Bradley Cooper, quite arguably is the best screen version yet. It doesn’t have Judy Garland, who as an individual performer still shines the brightest, but this 2018 musical drama does have really impressive musical and dramatic performances by both Cooper and Lady Gaga, with strong acting support from Sam Elliott.

TCM, 10:00 p.m. ET

Albert and David Maysles filmed this classic, much-loved documentary, capturing the eccentric personalities and strange relationship of society belles and recluses Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter “Little Edie.” Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore played them in a superb 2009 HBO movie, but nothing beats the unreal reality of this original article.
