THE CROWN

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: Season 2 of The Crown appears today on Netflix, and begins with an episode focusing on tensions both personal and international. On the personal front, there’s the marriage of Queen Elizabeth (Claire Foy) and Prince Philip (Matt Smith), which, as we meet them for this new season, is severely tested by his behavior at home and on tour. And on the international front, there’s the crisis at the Suez Canal, with the Egyptian uprising challenging British rule. And that’s just in the first of this season’s episodes, as postwar Britain and its queen have a lot of adjustments to make. CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND

CW, 8:00 p.m. ET

Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) continues what the show is calling her road to wellness – her slow but apparently sure trip back from despair, when she attempted suicide. That ultra-serious plot turn has given this show a new seriousness and weight, even in their fantasy musical numbers, and made it even more interesting to watch.

 
  
 
 
A CHRISTMAS CAROL

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

Holiday movies are being celebrated, and scheduled, this month on TCM – and the party begins with this 1951 absolute classic adaptation of the Charles Dickens tale. Alastair Sims stars as Ebenezer Scrooge, with Michael Hordern as Jacob Marley, Mervyn Johns as Bob Cratchit, and Glyn Dearman as little Tiny Tim. Afterward, at 9:45 p.m. ET, comes another early film adaptation of the same story: 1935’s Scrooge, starring Seymour Hicks in the title role.

 
  
 
 
MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

ABC, 9:01 p.m. ET

Last week, this series returned with a two-episode premiere that cast the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in space, on a ship run by malevolent blue aliens. Simmons was “adopted” by them, as a sort of slave, and tonight, Daisy takes some great risks to lead a rescue mission to rescue Simmons. But after that, what? And where?
