WINTER FINALE: If you’ve stayed with this series, you’ve noticed, I’m sure, it’s managed to plumb more emotional depths than ever before. One of its effective tricks this year has been to establish a strong romantic bond between a couple, then rend them apart, either by distance or death. Tonight’s winter finale threatens a bit of both: Simmons, long separated from and only recently reunited with Fitz, now has to watch helplessly, forced by HYDRA to monitor the portal to a vicious other world where she once was banished – and where Fitz and Coulson have just gone, along with the very villainous Ward.
