BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: Marvel’s Iron Fist is, by far, the weakest of the Marvel Comics series generated for Netflix – a gamut that is represented, on the other, excellent end, by Marvel’s Jessica Jones. By contrast, Iron Fist is such a leaden show that I’ve given up on it, at least enough to not bother to burden the last days of my vacation by watching previews of this new season. The reasons I’m mentioning it in Best Bets, therefore, are twofold. One fold is for diehard fans of every corner of the Marvel universe, who will watch anything – and here it is. The other fold is Alice Eve (pictured), who joins the cast this season, and was quite a standout in her guest appearances on such series as Entourage and Black Mirror. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

Various Networks, 8:00 p.m. ET

SPECIAL PREMIERE: This annual special, a benefit to raise money for cancer research and treatment, arguably is as noteworthy for the breadth of its TV presence as for the depth of its guest roster. Oh, there are celebrities aplenty – tonight’s list includes musical performances by Stevie Wonder and Little Big Town, and appearances by Jennifer Garner, Jon Hamm, and Matthew McConaughey – but check out the places where you can check them out. The networks simulcasting this fundraiser include CBS, NBC, ABC, PBS, Fox, HBO, Showtime, TNT… and that’s just for starters.

PBS, 10:00 p.m. ET

Andrew Wyeth, the artist son of the illustrator N.C. Wyeth, is the subject of tonight’s new American Masters profile – though the title could have referred to either. Check local listings.

HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET

It’s not my imagination, right? Even after more than a year where it seemed as though the cable news networks never bothered to remove or rest their superimposed “BREAKING NEWS” warning graphics, this week has seemed incessantly, almost insanely packed with news, revelations and drama – and that’s just emanating from Washington, D.C. After a week off, Maher is back to tackle it all. He’d better talk fast: There’s a lot to cover. Tonight’s guests include David Alexrod, Charlie Dent and, publicizing his upcoming Showtime series Kidding, Jim Carrey.
