BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Fox, 11:00 a.m. ET

Here it is: The 2019 FIFA World Cup Women’s Final, with the U.S.A. vs. the Netherlands. The U.S. is in white, the Dutch is in yellow, and this final should be a very colorful, flowing game.

CNN, 9:00 p.m. ET

DOCUMENTARY MINISERIES PREMIERE: Last night, CNN repeated all the TV-related episodes of its popular series of Decades documentaries – using them not only as filler for the holiday weekend, but also to consistently and constantly promote this new series from the same producers at Tom Hanks’ production company.  This one is devoted to The Movies, with a different decade each installment, beginning tonight with “The Eighties.” That was a good decade for Hanks in the movies – but really, what decade hasn’t been since he made his first Big Splash on the big screen? (See what I did there? Big?Splash?) And Hanks was great, and fair and quotable, in all the TV-related episodes, as when he described the wide-eyed childhood thrill of seeing Disney’s Wonderful World of Color on a color TV set. Oh, and one other notable difference between the TV-related programs for CNN and these new cinematic counterparts: I’m not in these movie ones, while I did appear in all the TV episodes. I therefore recommend The Movies even more highly… For a review, see Mike Hughes' Open Mike.

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

I’m beginning to think of Meryl Streep’s Mary Louise as the maternal equivalent of Walter White’s in-law and nemesis, Hank, on Breaking Bad. In both cases, Hank and Mary Louise are related to the drama’s protagonist by marriage: Hank was married to Walter’s wife’s sister, while Mary Louise was the mother of Perry, the now-dead husband of Nicole Kidman’s battered wife Celeste. Both Hank and Mary Louise are persistent bloodhounds, he on the trail of a local drug kingpin, and she suspecting her son’s death was not accidental. The difference is that Hank didn’t suspect, until near the end, that the culprit might be an actual relative – while Mary Louise has suspected Celeste and her close-knit female friends from the start. And they’re both right – yet while in some scenes we’re rooting for them, in others we’re rooting squarely against them. Very complicated. Very entertaining. And tonight, Mary Louise’s suspicions get even deeper.

National Geographic, 9:00 p.m. ET

This month is the golden anniversary of Apollo 11’s successful voyage to the moon, so expect, and enjoy, lots of related TV documentaries to mark the occasion. This is one of them. For overviews of the Apollo 11 anniversary programming, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower and Mike Hughes' Open Mike

Smithsonian, 9:00 p.m. ET

Ibid.

Showtime, 9:00 p.m. ET

The trail of the armored car robbers heats up, and leads to several different directions – some of which are dangerous, others of which are almost comic. Considering the way this particular crew of robbers has handled itself to this point, that sounds about right. And Kevin Bacon, as a tough and sometimes shady FBI guy on their trail, hits both serious and comic notes in almost every scene.

Bianculli’s curation effectively balances nostalgia with timely cultural markers, especially highlighting the ironic origins of Aquaman alongside the poignant Morrison tribute. https://victoryfoodscn.com
