BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

NBC, 9:00 a.m. ET

Yesterday, American Pharaoh completed a race to destiny by becoming the first Triple Crown winner since 1978. Today, at the 2015 French Open, Novak Djokovic gets a shot at attaining some sports destiny of his own, with a chance to complete his personal Grand Slam by winning, at long last, the French Open. But even after beating his long-time dominant clay-court rival, Rafael Nadal, in this year’s tournament, and taking two days to defeat semifinal opponent Andy Murray, Djokovic still has one more man to beat before claiming the trophy. Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland, ranked No. 8 to Djokovic’s No. 1, had made it to today’s final – and got to rest all day yesterday, while Djokovic had to play his final two sets against Murray in a two-day marathon.

CBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth are the hosts of this year’s Tony Awards, which promise excitement on both the drama and musical sides of the fence. With drama, there’s the question of whether Bradley Cooper will win for his starring role in The Elephant Man, or whether another familiar film face, Bill Nighy, will win for Skylight. Actresses, too, are well-represented by screen stars, including Helen Mirren in The Audience, Elisabeth Moss in The Heidi Chronicles, and Carey Mulligan of Skylight. And on the musical side, Chenoweth’s campy turn in On the Twentieth Century is challenged by Kelli O’Hara’s more classic one in The King and I, while Best Musical nominees include An American in Paris and Fun Home. Definitely a Tony show to watch – as are they all.

ABC, 8:00 p.m. ET

Game 2. It’s unfair to say of LeBron James, given his output in Game 1, that if he’d only made one more of his three throws, his Cleveland Cavaliers would have won that first game against the Golden State Warriors, instead of losing in overtime. Cleveland’s more significant loss, though, was that of James’ gifted teammate Kyrie Irving, who fractured his already injured left kneecap in overtime and will be missing from the rest of this year’s Finals. Given the deeper roster of the Warriors, that makes it even tougher on James to succeed in his goal of handing a championship title to Cleveland. But drama, of course, is what sports are all about.

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

How about last week’s episode, folks? I don’t think I’ve ever, ever seen a more extended battle sequence on a television series – or one which, after all that jaw-dropping action, managed to end with one unexpected, stunning, absolutely chilling capper at the end. And what happens tonight? In the North, Kit Harington’s Jon Snow returns to the Wall – while further south, Peter Dinklage’s Tyrion Lannister and Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen continue to explore their uneasy alliance.

Showtime, 10:00 p.m. ET

This series, like WGN’s Salem, has gotten shockingly creepy this season, and both series are pitting strong and ruthless supernatural women against one another. On Penny Dreadful, it seems as though the witches surrounding and bedeviling our heroes have every advantage, including love spells, voodoo dolls and inside informants – but the fight’s not over yet. Helen McCrory plays Evelyn Poole, the main, mean, witchly antagonist.
