BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Fox, 8:00 p.m. ET

This is the half of the season, it appears, when characters on both sides of the law are stepping up to make new changes. Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) intends to fight his way out of incarceration, and back into control of Gotham’s mean streets. Meanwhile, young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) begins to train seriously as the youngster who will become Batman – or, for now, Batboy.

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

These early rounds of The Voice are the most entertaining, and the best – and NBC clearly is aware of this, because this week it’s squeezing three consecutive nights out of The Voice, starting tonight. That’s six hours, fully two-thirds of NBC’s schedule between now and Wednesday, and no one gets more screen time, or a career bump, than the judges. For this tenth cycle, the judges returning from last time are Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Pharrell Williams, and replacing Gwen Stefani for Cycle 10 is Christina Aguilera.

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

Last week, this documentary by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, about honor-killing in Pakistan (and, specifically, a young woman who survived the targeted killing by her father and uncle), won the Academy Award for documentary short subject. This week, here it is on HBO, which helped produce it – the latest feather in a feather-filled cap by HBO documentary maven Sheila Nevins.

A&E, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: Last season ended with Norman (Freddie Highmore) killing someone, but doing it as his mother Norma – though, in his increasingly twisted mind, it was his mom (Vera Farmiga) doing the deadly deed. And what this means, going forward, is that both Highmore and Farmiga get to play dual roles. Highmore plays Norman and, on occasion, his embodiment of mother Norma – and Farmiga plays both mother Norma and her son’s imagined killer version of Mother Norma. And that, I suspect, is where much of this season’s true fun will reside.

AMC, 10:00 p.m. ET

Kim (Rhea Seehorn) has to go into the boardroom, to face both her boss and Saul’s brother, to defend her culpability with Saul’s controversial TV commercial. And the question she’s asked, basically, is: What did you know, and when did you know it?
